While You Were Sleeping: The Gyllenhaal Divorce

Robbie Williams:  This week, we're blogging from a quiet beach near Clearwater, Florida... so your news will be a bit more Southern and probably a lot weirder...The government will finally bail out the public, thanks to up to $800 billion in money being directed toward allowing for more loans to consumers. Great, just what we need, more debt. There's nothing worse than getting busted for being involved in prostitution and having your face plastered all over the local media. Actually, we take that back: there's nothing worse than getting busted for prostitution and having your face plastered all over the world, plus admit to dating a much, much older doorman who won the lottery and buys you expensive things. Yeah, that will go over well with your childhood community overseas. Kristen Johnston, who took it off for-- what else-- PETA. And she, uh, mounted a house for the shoot...Cancer is on the decline in the U.S. for the first time in our history. However, some naysayers are saying that the amount of people being screened has fallen as well...  We were a little surprised to see Republican Governor Charlie Crist talking "new taxes" in the paper here yesterday. Of course, the top story today? "Gov. Charlie Crist backs off both [tackling a foreclosure freeze and a cigarette tax] after talking to representatives of the banking and tobacco industries." What a whimp. Even some elected officials were stumped by this challenging US history and government quiz. One Florida neighborhood's concoction of choice this Thanksgiving? The Molotov cocktail, of course. How great does Beyonce look as Etta James? And Maggie and Jake Gyllenhaal's parents are involved in a nasty divorce after 32 years of marriage. Mom is about to go bankrupt thanks to Dad not paying his share of their bills... won't someone think of the children(s' careers)?  Some unlinked stories via The St. Petersburg Times.  Related: The Second Life Divorce Gets Funnier After The Split Sex Crimes Prosecutor Charged With Twelve, Count 'Em, Twelve Sex Crimes While You Were Sleeping: 93% Prefer Real Boobs Merry Christmas... Album: Tony Coe/Gerard Presencer, Love Walked In, (Zephyr)
Mainstream jazz is an unchanging form that turns away from the past half-century in favour of tunes and pleasure. That this recording of Gershwin songs is so enjoyable is partly due to the players: Coe on clarinet/sax, Presencer on flugelhorn, pianist Brian Lemon and bassist Dave Green have all done time as spiky modernists, enabling them to treasure these tranquil surfaces. And who could resist "A Foggy Day" and "They Can't Take That Away From Me"? "I Loves You Porgy" is heaven. Phil Johnson

Take that, Tina: Palin wants to spoof her spoofer
It’s looking more and more likely that Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin will appear on ”Saturday Night Live” — to have some fun with Tina Fey. As the comedian’s impressions of the GOP vice presidential candidate draw laughs from Republicans and Democrats alike, a top honcho from the John McCain campaign tells me there’s a debate going on about how to respond. Some key McCain staffers are content with Palin joking about the “SNL” routines on the campaign trail —

The Web Guru
If you wanted to wipe out the American media establishment in one blow, you might have targeted the Grand Ballroom on the third floor of the Plaza hotel at around 9 a.m. on Nov. 12. The Foursquare Conference was organized by media mogul Steve Rattner’s Quadrangle Partners, and had the kind of exclusive list Mr. Rattner is known for. Barry Diller attended the conference, as did Lachlan Murdoch, Arthur Sulzberger Jr., and Tribune chief Sam Zell. It was just the place for Jeff Jarvis, the tall 54-year-old pr

Midweek Special: NYC Restaurant Review Roundup
Buzz has been building for Socarrat Paella Bar (pictured), the casual tapas and paella joint that has fans waiting 20-30 minutes for a seat at a long communal table. And after today's review by Frank Bruni in the Times, you may as well take that wait time and double it: "They’re better than the paellas at many other Spanish restaurants in New York, where paella doesn’t always fare so well...The broad, shallow, black cast iron pans in which they’re cooked are put on pedestals in the center of the table

The Gyllenhaals Are Broke
Naomi claims she’s asked Stephen to pay some of the bills, but says he’s refused to do it. Stephen has reportedly sent her an email saying, I have been clear that if worse comes to worse, I will let all of this collapse into ruin, just as I believe letting the markets crash and burn [is] the right approach. Pain now for clarity and balance later. Here’s a little suggestion, maybe you could just ask your kids for $$$? I’m sure Jake could probably spare a few bucks.

Gyllenhaal parents in financial strife
The Gyllenhall parents are apparently suffering some financial difficulties, as revealed in court documents regarding their divorce.
