Stars set for Obama inauguration - Entertainment News, Business News, Media - Variety
Barack Obama's inauguration team announced a huge lineup of talent -- assembled in less than two weeks -- that will perform at an opening celebration at the Lincoln Memorial on Sunday, in a kickoff heavy in its mix of history and leading artists.
The roster includes a cross-section of Legends and luminaries: U2, Beyonce, Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Wonder, Sheryl Crow, Garth Brooks, Shakira, John Mellencamp, Renee Fleming, Josh Groban, Herbie Hancock, Usher, James Taylor, will.i.am, Mary J. Blige, John Legend
Wanna Catch Obama's Inauguration? It'll Cost Ya
Interest in President-elect Barack Obama's inauguration is running so high that one ticket broker is asking $20,095 for a single ticket. Entry to the biggest event in Washington is free if your congressman or senator grants your request, but with demand outpacing supply a traditional giveaway has turned into a thriving online marketplace. Legitimate ticket brokers -- the same companies that peddle tickets to rock concerts and NASCAR races -- are selling tickets to the swearing-in of Barack Obama for thousan

Mikal Gilmore Sums Up ’60s as Decade of ‘Discontents’
The innocence and subsequent turbulence of the 1960s serve as the backdrop for “Stories Done: Writing on the 1960s and Its Discontents,” the anthology by journalist Mikal Gilmore. Culled mostly from Gilmore’s articles in Rolling Stone, it examines such seminal figures as Timothy Leary, Ken Kesey, Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, The Grateful Dead, the Beatles and Leonard Cohen. “Stories” is Gilmore’s third book. His first, “Shot in the Heart,” is a memoir a

Bob Dylan: Tell Tale Signs: the Bootleg Series Vol. 8 (Preview)
Bob Dylan’s Bootleg series has been a boon to fans of Hibbing, Minnesota’s favorite son. Instead of having to seek out Dylan’s unreleased material, alternate takes, and live performances, the man himself has been good enough to compile them with outstanding sound quality and throw in some fancy pictures and commentary to boot. Tell Tale Signs: the Bootleg Series Volume 8 collects unreleased material, demos, and live tracks from 1989 through 2006. While this set might not have the pure curi

Musical Ignorance: Something Way Too Many People Are Proud Of These Days [Burning Questions]
Carrie Brownstein's blog Monitor Mix is generally interesting, but something about yesterday's discussion about critically acclaimed artists people aren't really familiar with rubbed the music fan in me the wrong way. Not because of Brownstein, but because of her readers; something about comment-section types bragging that they'd never heard Led Zeppelin or David Bowie seems deeply, deeply wrong.
It's certainly OK to have your preferences (I certainly have mine), but I'm not sure bragging that you

RATING: (WILD APPLAUSE) The stuff Bob Dylan throws away is better than most other people's best. This does not come as news to any of the avid fans who have long traded in bootleg recordings of his unreleased '60s recordings, but this latest collection - the...

PLAYLIST: Fresh thoughts on new music
A treasure trove for Bob Dylan fans both casual and obsessive, "Tell Tale Signs" (FOUR STARS out of four stars, out Tuesday on Columbia) is filled with a ton of previously unreleased material taken from the past 20 years of the iconic singer-songwriter's career. Considering that over that time Dylan released a number of albums that are widely considered to contain some of his finest work -- "Oh Mercy," "Time Out of Mind," "Love and Theft" and "Modern Times" -- this eighth installment of Dylan's officially r
