reports that “East of Eden” is getting a new adaptation (let’s not call it a remake, even if the first did star James Dean) that will be directed by Tom Hooper (”John Adams”). Christopher Hampton (”Atonement”) will pen the script.

A Cursory Look at Steinbeck’s East of Eden
John Steinbeck’s classic retelling of the biblical Cain and Abel story, “East of Eden” is set to be made into a new film. The book was released in 1952 and its addition to Oprah’s Book Club in 2004 revived interest in the novel. This led Universal Pictures and Imagine Entertainment to option the book.
East of Eden Grabs New Writer, Director
Universal Pictures and Imagine Entertainment's Brian Grazer have hired Tom Hooper to direct and Christopher Hampton to write East of Eden, an adaptation of the John Steinbeck novel, report the trades.
First published in 1952, East of Eden is Steinbeck's retelling of the Cain and Abel story, set in California's Salinas Valley. The multigenerational story focuses on the Trask brothers and a woman who comes between the siblings. Elia Kazan (On the Waterfront) helmed a film version of the novel in 1955 with

in New York that the rights belong to Penguin Group Inc., and the heirs of
John Steinbeck
's widow, Elaine. Author John Steinbeck died in 1968; his wife in 2003. The heirs include her sister, four children...
