Arnold Schwarzenegger: When Arnold Schwarzenegger's cyborg assassin said his famous one-liner, "I'll be back," what he really meant was that he wasn't going anywhere.
And that couldn't be more true today now that James Cameron's sci-fi masterpiece The Terminator joins a list of 25 classics, among them John Boorman's Deliverance and Richard Brooks' big-screen version of Truman Capote's In Cold Blood, that have been tapped for preservation by the National Film Registry at the Library of Congress. The Last Days Of Mademoiselle: Cocaine, Cigarettes & Calorie Counts [Maghag]
I used to really like Mademoiselle magazine. Not as old or cold as Vogue, not as dull as Glamour, not as do-goodery as Marie Claire, not as ditsy or sex-addicted as Cosmopolitan. Though the magazine folded in 2001, when it first started, in 1935, it was known for publishing short stories by authors like Truman Capote. Sylvia Plath worked as a guest editor there in 1953. The publication's tagline, in 1954, was: "The magazine for smart young women." Smart! Now Valerie Frankel, a former editor at Made

Dali: Pattinson, Banderas, and Pacino -- The Showdown!
We all saw what happened when two Truman Capote biopics collided within a mere year of each other. Capote hit the finish line first, the audiences and academy cheered, and Philip Seymour Hoffman won an Oscar. When Infamous trotted in later, the recognition (for those that watched) was far less audible. The shadow of Capote took up most of the spotlight, and audiences and critics couldn't help but compare it to its predecessor. What happens then when not two but three confirmed (plus two rumored) same-subj

Gus Van Sant's "Milk'' averaged a sizzling estimated $1.38 million over the three day weekend, landing in the No. 10 spot at only 36 locations. Move over, Truman Capote: Another movie duel to the death?
When I was a kid, I spent a lot of time in Chicago, home of two great baseball teams, a host of colorful politicians and the best blues in the world. Back in the day, you weren't anyone in the blues world unless you were signed to Chess Records, the label that made stars out of a generation of rough and tumble musicians, notably Muddy Waters, Little Walter, Willie Dixon and Howlin' Wolf. So when I was at the recent Toronto Film Festival, I made a point of seeing "Who Do You Love," which stars Al

Sean Penn goes gay — dying for another Oscar?
Good news for Sean Penn fans: At the end of "Milk" — SPOILER ALERT — you get to watch your hero get blown away by gunfire. Sorry, but that seems to be the price he must pay if Sean Penn wants to win another Oscar to match the chunk of academy gold he nabbed in 2003 for "Mystic River." That's because gay roles that win Academy Awards for actors almost always must suffer ghastly deaths. No star has ever won an Oscar for portraying a gay person who lives happily ever after. Th

Lauren C.’s Book Report
Truman Capote once said of Jack Kerouac’s works: “That’s not writing. It’s typing.” Imagine what Capote would say about Lauren Conrad. The blonded star of MTV’s “The Hills” just landed a deal to write three books of what is being called young-adult fiction, this despite the fact that the series, to be called “L.A. Candy,” will focus on a normal California teenager who finds herself thrown in the midst of the celebrity circuit after appearing on a r

The trick -- in our version, set in a penthouse suite at Manhattan's 6 Columbus hotel, Brando and Capo

Fall Books: A Literary Leafpile
The Mural at the Waverly Inn: A Portrait of Greenwich Village Bohemians Text By Dorothy Gallager Pantheon, $15.95 “The thing about a mural in a restaurant,” swooping-haired Vanity Fair editor Graydon Carter writes in the introduction to The Mural at the Waverly Inn, “is that, in a way, it tells the story of the customers back to them.” Mr. Carter, who co-owns that haute-bohemian Bank Street bastion and commissioned its art from Edward Sorel, really means that a good restaurant mural tells the story

Arnold Schwarzenegger's 10 Greatest Acting Challenges! [Arnold Schwarzenegger]
When science fiction legend Arnold Schwarzenegger leaves office as California governor in 2011, he doesn't plan to return to acting. Instead, he wants to help lead the way on climate change. That's a darn shame, because we need Arnie's Heston-on-steroids style of acting more than we need his thoughts on global warming. And to prove it, here are 10 movie moments where Arnie brought his acting A-game in the face of almost insurmountable challenges. You see, Schwarzenegger isn't just an action hero, he's our gu

California plays the lottery to balance budget [Government Math]
California's most overdue budget ever — nearly a quarter late, and totalling $144.5 billion — has been signed by governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. As part of the plan, the state will ask voters to approve a measure that will allow California to borrow US$10B — yes ten billion dollars — from future state lottery revenue to prop up the next two budgets. NY To Tax Movie Theaters & Ipod Downloads
I can't even imagine what new taxes California's Governator Arnold Schwarzenegger will impose to make up the state's $11.2B deficit. But his counterpart in New York, David Paterson suggests bridging that state's $15.4B budget gap by calling for 88 new fees. These include an "iPod tax" on the sale of downloaded music and other "digitally delivered entertainment services." State sales taxes also may be imposed at movie theaters, sports events, and satellite TV and radio.
