TECH SUPPORT: Best Sound Mixing ” Volume I

Baz Luhrmann: Those words from Al Jolson forever changed filmmaking in 1927, ushering in “talkies” and bringing about the beginning of the end of the silent film era. The Academy Award for sound mixing recognizes the artists who fashion a film’s audio side. It must be distinguished from Best Sound Editing, which is the integration of artificially created sound effects into the mix. Mixing is the blending of those effects, along with dialogue, music and any other noise captured during filming. The Oscar awards the sound re-recording mixers in this category, who do the blending, as well as the production sound mixer, who captures the sounds on the set. Blockbusters, action flicks, war films and musicals usually do particularly well in thi Read full story at www.incontention.com

Will filmgoers rally around World War II movies?
IT'S THE one war in the last 60 years that doesn't divide politicians, pundits and voters. But can World War II bring moviegoers together? Starting on Friday and ending at Christmas, at least half a dozen dramas whose plots connect with World War II are scheduled to arrive in theaters, all hoping to perform better than the crop of recent war films looking at the modern Middle Eastern conflict. The new movies -- Friday's Spike Lee-directed "Miracle at St. Anna," Nov. 7's concentration camp story "Th

I am not a Baz Luhrman fan and I am not usually a Nicole fan but Australia looks amazing!!
Hugh and NicoleThere are two kinds of people in this world. People who loved Moulin Rouge and people who didn't. I was in the latter category. I don't like movies where I feel like I am tripping on drugs unless I am actually tripping on drugs. However, I think Baz may have calmed down a bit for his newest film, "Australia." Yeah apparently they were affected by World War II also so this is a story about that. Nicole Kidman plays her usual character: rich, gorgeous woman who has to take care of a farm and fa

New 'Australia' Trailer: A Romantic Adventure with Wolverine and The Others
If Crocodile Dundee II were a big-budget Lifetime Original Movie based loosely on Pearl Harbor, this is what it would look like. Except this is directed by Moulin Rouge's Baz Luhrmann, stars Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman, and will surely be nominated for several Oscars, whereas the Lifetime version would be called Danielle Steel's Down Under, and would be watched by only sad housewives. It looks pretty good if you're into that whole sweeping, epic romance sort of thing (no one is judging you): Co

New Trailer for Luhrmann’s Australia
I haven’t seen a good, sweeping romance since 2006’s The Painted Veil and even that seems small potatoes compared to the grandness of Baz Luhrmann sweeping Australia. I’ve already gushed and moaned at how badly I want to see this film and this new trailer only adds to my already heightened level of excitement. Granted, not much new to go on here but it features even more footage from the film and a score that doesn’t really work for me but I’m willing to overlook that one smal

“You can serve Germany or the Fuhrer, not both!” - VALKYRIE trailer!
Hot on the heels of the first poster artwork for VALKYRIE comes a confidently cut and intense trailer which just goes to show how movies can live and die by their commercial reels. The one we saw nearly a year ago virtually killed the movie and indeed it was so bad, United Artists kept changing their release and had to come up with a whole new marketing campaign for the movie. It’s been a long time in coming but their movie will perform much stronger on the case of this evidence. SEE THE TRAILER I

Brendan Fraser Talks About Almost Being Superman and J.J. Abrams’ ‘Far Superior’ Script
Back in April at the NY Comic-Con, Brendan Fraser regaled us with the tale of suiting up as the Man of Steel when he auditioned for the Brett Ratner/J.J. Abrams “Superman” project-that-never-was. Now the folks at VoicesFromKrypton have a bit more with Fraser on the experience, where the actor talks about how he came this close to landing the role in Bryan Singer’s “Superman Returns,” and also discusses J.J. Abrams’ script versus Singer’s. “I was so enthusiast

Sigourney Weaver On ‘Alien’ Sequel: ‘Let Ripley Rest’
The other day, we asked Sigourney Weaver to comment on any similarities that might exist between Ellen Ripley, the butt-kicking heroin from “Alien” and its sequels, and Dr. Grace Augustine, her new character from “Avatar.” But while we’re geared up for Sigourney’s newest, we couldn’t help but wonder more about her first big-screen role, especially given recent rumors that director Ridley Scott had an idea for another “Alien” film. So, will we ever see Ripley again? “The last time [

MGM has released a ‘Valkyrie’ featurette…
Apparently MGM has been doing some research on the Internet(s) and has heard what we have all been saying. They decided to release a 3 minute featurette on the movie which you can watch below. I still have a problem with the lack of accents in a WWII movie, especially when the main character is a famed German commander played by one Tom Cruise. I can understand if he just gave a really horrible accent, but honestly if he couldn’t pull it off, they should have gone and found someone else that could

Jon Favreau Dishes On ‘Iron Man 2’ Villains, Story &‘Dark Knight’ Comparison, Questions IMAX
“Iron Man” director Jon Favreau had plenty to say about the film future of Marvel’s armored hero during a live, online Q&A session with fans, including some hints about the storylines that will drive “Iron Man 2,” the characters — both good and bad — that could make an appearance, and how he feels about the other big superhero movie that hit theaters this year. “Mandarin is still an important figure in the Iron Man universe,” wrote Favreau during th

Can ‘Australia’ Finally Convince Audiences That Hugh Jackman Isn’t Gay?
20th Century Fox sure hopes so! In a story in yesterday's Times, overcompensating executives at the studio hilariously describe Viva Laughlin–toplining, three-time Tony Awards host Hugh Jackman as "rough-hewn" and a "young Clint Eastwood." "There are not many actors who have an ability to pick up a Nicole Kidman, throw her on the bed and ravish her with believability," says Australia director Baz Luhrmann. Additionally: "He is also excellent with a cattle whip." Australia (opening November 26) —

Nevada's Free-Movie Lovers Ambushed With 'Valkyrie' Screening [Building Der Buzz]
Valkyrie. It's that rare movie which, without even having been released, has already managed to break free from its celluloid constraints to become a genuine state of mind. ("How you feeling?" "Oh, a little Valkyrieish, you?" "Same.") We all know the story by now: Odd flight of historical fancy by Nazi-obsessed director Bryan Singer; Tom Cruise signs on, bearing an uncanny resemblance to Col. Shtuffel Von Klingenhauser, the movie's famed Hitler-hunter; mishaps and flatulence follow, Nazis are injured and s

‘Valkyrie’ Gets a Poster
I was really looking forward to ‘Valkyrie’ until I got my hands on the screenplay.  I loved the idea of a plot to kill Hitler, but the script just wasn’t that well written.  In fact, it was kind of boring. Nonetheless, the new poster has been released, and it’s pretty impressive.  Much more creative than simple Photoshopped floating heads.  Hopefully Bryan Singer’s direction will improve on the screenplay. source: Rope of Silicon If you're new here, you may want to subsc
