TECH SUPPORT: Best Costume Design ” Volume I

Baz Luhrmann: The Academy Award for Best Costume Design recognizes, shock of shocks, the clothes and accessories worn by actors in a film. Clothing can add to the story and express the nature and situationof the characters who wear them. If a single word could be used to describe this category, it would be “period.” 31 of the 40 nominees here this decade were period pieces. This is not altogether surprising. Period clothes automatically draw attention by not being the sort of fashion we see every day on the street and require the costume designer to accurately portray the time in which the film takes place. The nominations two years ago “The Queen” and “The Devil Wears Prada” were refreshing in my opinion but extremely rar Read full story at www.incontention.com

Will filmgoers rally around World War II movies?
IT'S THE one war in the last 60 years that doesn't divide politicians, pundits and voters. But can World War II bring moviegoers together? Starting on Friday and ending at Christmas, at least half a dozen dramas whose plots connect with World War II are scheduled to arrive in theaters, all hoping to perform better than the crop of recent war films looking at the modern Middle Eastern conflict. The new movies -- Friday's Spike Lee-directed "Miracle at St. Anna," Nov. 7's concentration camp story "Th

I am not a Baz Luhrman fan and I am not usually a Nicole fan but Australia looks amazing!!
Hugh and NicoleThere are two kinds of people in this world. People who loved Moulin Rouge and people who didn't. I was in the latter category. I don't like movies where I feel like I am tripping on drugs unless I am actually tripping on drugs. However, I think Baz may have calmed down a bit for his newest film, "Australia." Yeah apparently they were affected by World War II also so this is a story about that. Nicole Kidman plays her usual character: rich, gorgeous woman who has to take care of a farm and fa

New 'Australia' Trailer: A Romantic Adventure with Wolverine and The Others
If Crocodile Dundee II were a big-budget Lifetime Original Movie based loosely on Pearl Harbor, this is what it would look like. Except this is directed by Moulin Rouge's Baz Luhrmann, stars Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman, and will surely be nominated for several Oscars, whereas the Lifetime version would be called Danielle Steel's Down Under, and would be watched by only sad housewives. It looks pretty good if you're into that whole sweeping, epic romance sort of thing (no one is judging you): Co

Baz Luhrmann Ads Propose Australian Tourism as Salve for Shattered American Lives [Untruth In Advertising]
Baz Luhrmann's boundless ambition may have met its match in a new pair of TV spots commissioned by Tourism Australia, an organization still reeling from its failure to entice international visitors two years ago with its bikini-clad representative scolding, "Where the bloody hell are you?" This time around, the tourism board opted for the more cheerful specter of an Aboriginal child whose fistful of fairy dust cures everything from burnout to bipolar disorder, all graphically allayed against the backdrop of

New Trailer for Luhrmann’s Australia
I haven’t seen a good, sweeping romance since 2006’s The Painted Veil and even that seems small potatoes compared to the grandness of Baz Luhrmann sweeping Australia. I’ve already gushed and moaned at how badly I want to see this film and this new trailer only adds to my already heightened level of excitement. Granted, not much new to go on here but it features even more footage from the film and a score that doesn’t really work for me but I’m willing to overlook that one smal

Swept Up to Down Under, Baz Luhrmann style
Thanks to Australian reader, David M., for pointing us to two new Oz Tourism ads directed by Baz Luhrmann and featuring Brandon Walters, the 12-year-old kid costarring in Australia who Luhrmann says is destined to become the country's next leading man. "Our next leading man is about four-foot ...

Can ‘Australia’ Finally Convince Audiences That Hugh Jackman Isn’t Gay?
20th Century Fox sure hopes so! In a story in yesterday's Times, overcompensating executives at the studio hilariously describe Viva Laughlin–toplining, three-time Tony Awards host Hugh Jackman as "rough-hewn" and a "young Clint Eastwood." "There are not many actors who have an ability to pick up a Nicole Kidman, throw her on the bed and ravish her with believability," says Australia director Baz Luhrmann. Additionally: "He is also excellent with a cattle whip." Australia (opening November 26) —

Be Still My Heart -- New 'Australia' Trailer!
The release date of Australia is a mere month away, yet there's been little in the way of promotion for it. A few posters, a new release date, a few interviews with Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman -- that's it. While this could spell a lack of confidence, I think it's largely due to the fact that Baz Luhrmann was still tinkering with the film as of August. But at last, there is a new trailer, courtesy of MSN, but sans embed code. It's an odd trailer. It starts off in a style that's quite contemporary, both

"Australia" to Top "Titanic"?
Marcos Oliveira, head of 20th Century Fox in Australia, told the Sydney Morning Herald that he believes the upcoming Australia, starring Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman and directed by Baz Luhrmann will become “the biggest [film] of all time” in that country. That’s saying a lot, since Titanic came out of that studio, as well. Further fueling my interest in this film is Jackman’s comment at the Australian International Movie Convention. He called his part in the film “the rol

Down under - the movie: But can Baz, Nicole and Hugh persuade us to go to Australia?
It is one of the most hotly anticipated Australian films of all time, featuring two of the country's leading actors, Nicole Kidman and Hugo Jackman, and a backdrop of magnificent outback scenery. But there is more than box office success and critical acclaim riding on the fortunes of the epic film, Australia, a Second World War saga of romance, conflict and adventure, directed by Baz Luhrmann, who made Moulin Rouge and Strictly Ballroom. Australians are hoping that th

Keith Urban: Being Mr. Mom Is 'Beautiful'
Diaper duty is no sweat for hands-on new dad Keith Urban, the singer tells CMT Insider. In fact, he says, he relishes his role as full-time dad to 2-month-old Sunday Rose while wife, Nicole Kidman, is filming. "When my wife's working and I've got time off, I'm just Mr. Mom during the day, taking care of the little girl," said Urban, 40, who also called fatherhood "beautiful." The Kidman-Urban family spent time in Australia while Kidman, 40, filmed the Baz Luhrmann epic Australia, and

Hey, Where Is The Australia Push Back Date Outrage?
Harry Potter fans aren't The Only Ones who have to suffer the INCREDIBLE DISREGARD of Hollywood. Now that Warner Bros. has callously pushed Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince back 8 months (let's all kill ourselves), FOX is showing the same kind of epic disdain for Baz Luhrmann fans (or Big Luhrmenn, as they call themselves on message boards). Variety reports: SYDNEY - Fox is shifting its big-ticket outback romance "Australia" to Nov. 26. "Australia" was slated to release Stateside Nov. 14, about 48-

New 'Australia' TV trailer looks impressive
MSN recently released what it calls an extended TV trailer for Baz Luhrmann's upcoming romance drama "Australia," which stars Nicole Kidman as an English aristocrat who teams up with a stockman (Hugh Jackman) to drive her cattle across Australia’s most unforgiving land and later faces the Japanese bombing of the city of Darwin. As you can see and hear above (via Trailer Addict), the stunning music and beautiful images make this new footage look grand. I have to admit I am quite looking forward to seeing t

Nicole Kidman attributes pregnancy to 'fertility waters'
Wannabe mothers should try chasing Australian waterfalls. So says Oscar-winning actress Nicole Kidman, who credits a dip in an obscure Outback pool for her unexpected mid-life pregnancy. The "Moulin Rouge" star, who gave birth to daughter Sunday Rose last July, claims that she and six other women who swam in Kununurra waters during production of upcoming Baz Luhrmann romance "Australia" later miraculously conceived.
