Joel Coen: The latest wacky work from Ethan and Joel Coen, Burn After Reading, is headed to screens next week. George Clooney says he ‘couldn’t do what Brad and Angie are doing’
Star Magazine must be making deals with a lot of celebrity publicists because they’ve sure been scoring the A-list interviews lately. Interviews with Clooney are a dime a dozen but still remain fun as anything to read. Senators, Presidents and the Wacky Fall Ahead
In the specialty world, the summer ends as it began -- with more confusion and musical chairs than at a children's birthday party (or the Republican convention). It was, after all, back on June 3 that Paramount Vantage began its non-consolidatory consolidation -- it folded in marketing, distribution and physical production in what turned out to be prelude to the laying off of sixty staffers, its reinvention as a genre label and the departures of specialty vets Amy Israel and Gerry Rich. So why should the

Code of Coens: How to succeed in filmmaking
From their audacious 1984 debut “Blood Simple” onward, filmmaker brothers Joel and Ethan Coen have built a remarkably consistent and unmistakably personal body of work. Their latest, a hard-edged adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s novel “No Country For Old Men,” is one of the frontrunners at this year’s Oscars, tied with “There Will Be Blood” with eight nominations, including best picture. While it clearly ranks alongside “Fargo” and “The Big Lebowski” as the brothers’ best wo

Coen brothers cast 'Serious' men
The Coen brothers have tapped a pair of relative unknowns to star in their next pic, "A Serious Man." Michael Stuhlbarg, a Tony-nominated actor with little experience in front of the cameras, and Richard Kind, a character actor best known for his role on ABC's "Spin City," will star as brothers in the period black comedy. Set in 1967, story centers on Larry Gopnik (Stuhlbarg), a Midwestern professor whose life begins to unravel when his wife sets out to leave him and his socially inept brother (Kind)

Coen brothers win best director(s)
I'm a little surprised - I thought Paul Thomas Anderson would take it for "There Will Be Blood". But, there you go, their third Oscar in total, and their second for the night.

Is Hollywood Lacking In "Manly" Men? [Gender Benders]
Are there any tough guys left in America? Over on Entertainment Weekly's PopWatch Blog, Mandi Bierly links to a piece in Variety written by Anne Thompson, in which Thompson asks, "Where have the manly movie stars gone?" She claims the Hollywood machine has churned out nothing but boy-men. Johnny Depp? "Fey." Brendan Fraser? "Goofy." Keanu Reeves and Tom Cruise? Just not macho enough! When a studio wants a real manly type, they turn to the UK, Australia or Europe: Christian Bale, Gerard Butler, Hugh Jackman
