Song of the Day: Andrew Bird, "Oh No"

Download Andrew Bird: - âOh Noâ
Andrew Bird always struck me as an incredible songwriter, with a wide array of awesome songs spanned multiple albums, that could make even life long lived band envious. I mean, when someone releases a new internationally acclaimed album almost every year, for the last 10 years, at least, you know you’ve got true talent at your hands. Anyway, if any of you is interested in what our little Chicago troubadour has been up to lately, know that he’s prepping a new album soon. He’s latest effort,
Andrew Birdâs Noble Beast due in Jan, stream âOh Noâ now
“Oh No” is the first track off Bird’s Noble Beast, which is due out January 29th on Fat Possum. Each record of his seems to have very strong production ties which separate his great-but-occasionally-similar albums from ever sounding repetitive. Looks like this new one is going to carry on that trend; “Oh No” sounds terrific.

Andrew Bird plays new song âSection 8 Cityâ for Nigel Godrichâs From the Basement series
La Blogotheque pointed me to this great video of Andrew Bird performing his new song “Section 8 City” solo in Godrich’s basement. It’s moving, beautiful and everything I’ve come to expect from Andrew Bird.

New Andrew Bird - "Oh No"
If you recall, Owen Pallett told us Andrew Bird handled the whistling in the St. Kitts Orchestra on his forthcoming Plays To Please EP. "Oh No" offers some whistling, too, but this time Andrew's front and center. Not too long ago we heard some live Bird songs, where we mentioned "Oh No," but this is the first Noble Beat studio work we've captured. The song mixes classy violin, whistling, guitar accents, and harmonies with lyrics about calculated blows to the head and harmless sociopaths.

Premature Evaluation: Andrew Bird - Noble Beast
Andrew Bird hasn't been shy about previewing tracks from his fifth album during his various live sets. That, and the fact that Noble Beasts opens with "Oh No" and then the previously heard "Masterswarm" and "Fitz And The Dizzyspells" along with "Natural Disaster," "Effigy," and "Anonanimal" later in the track list, gives the collection a familiar air even on first listen. Of course, Bird takes the songs to a different place in their studio renderings.
It's a light and airy set, which fi

Before that, Mr. Bird has plenty of summer dates that'll take him from L.A. to Norway to Scotland, along with most places in between. He's also set to flash his precious wares on "The Tonight Show With Conan O'Brien" (still feels great to write...
Andrew Bird Planning Tour in Early 2009
Andrew Bird will be whistling his way through the US beginning in late January with Lonely, Dear (except for Carnegie Hall, which will feature Bird and Dosh).
In case anyone was wondering, there is a “Sean’s birthday” angle to all of this. It’s here. Thursday is the big day, after all.

New Live Andrew Bird Songs
The last peep we got out of Andrew Bird was some literal whistling as part of Final Fantasy's Toronto-based St. Kitts Orchestra on the second of Owen Pallet's forthcoming EPs, Plays To Please. Bird played a number of festivals this spring and summer, though, most recently at Outside Lands at the end of August. During those sets, he previewed tracks from the unreleased Armchair Apocrypha followup, A Non-Animal. For instance, the percussive "Master Swarm" from 8/24 at the aforementioned Outside Lands in Gold
Andrew Bird Discovers His Inner Operatic Folkie
Andrew Bird hates rehearsing. He counts on the sense of peril that he gets onstage — that feeling that everything can unravel in an instant — to keep him inside his music and prevent him from succumbing to self-doubt. So last month, when Bird was preparing to go on tour with his new backing band, he decided that instead of practicing the songs from his new album, “Noble Beast,” they would play two surprise shows at the Hideout, a working-class-bar-cum-indie-rock-haven in

Surfacing: In Austin, Vinyl Is Still Vital
STANDING on the wrong side of “full capacity” didn’t discourage the dozens of Andrew Bird fans gathered outside the singer’s show at Waterloo Records in Austin last month.
Clustered around doors opened onto the parking lot, they listened as Mr. Bird’s voice soared over his signature string-enhanced compositions. Some were blissed out, eyes closed, while others craned to see past the open doors; one woman pressed a camera phone between posters of Cruiserweight and Cono
Wilco Kind of Overdo It
On this brand-new song (recorded just the other day at the Bridge School Benefit), Jeff Tweedy promises he'd "kill for you" and "die for you," but if the other tracks on Wilco's next album sound anything like this, that probably won't be necessary. [Muzzle of Bees]

Pezzettino: âSweet Descentâ
Justin from Fishboy pointed me towards Pezzettino’s cute pop music. It’s strangely non-traditional and familiar at the same time. And though this photo and song don’t showcase it, she spends a lot of songs with an accordion — it’s like someone gave the Arcade Fire’s Regine her own solo project when she was a young girl, but minus the shouting.

Pezzettino sounds like she’d be a great opener for lots of my favorite classically-minded
Randiâs Best (and Worst) of 2008
This year has been pretty great. I started it off in Costa Rica for 10 days, and I finished it with 5 in Florida. The music wasnât too bad either⌠we were introduced to great new bands, but lost legends like Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, Bo Diddly, Isaac Hayes, Richard Wright, Odetta, Eartha Kitt, and George Carlin (who I know shouldnât count under music legends but I adored him). I must say Iâm really looking forward to next yearâs selections (Animal Collective, Andrew Bird, Chris Cornell, L
Suzanne Vega is the "Mother of the MP3"
As it does for just about everything, the New York Times has a blog about songwriting. Itâs called, somewhat pretentiously, Measure for Measure: How to Write a Song and Other Mysteries. Itâs rarely updated, but itâs rarely bad. It features folks like Andrew Bird, Roseanne Cash, and Peter Holsapple (formerly of the Continental Drifters).
Suzanne Vega is also a semi-regular contributor. Youâll probably know her for her hits âLukaâ and 1987âs near-ubiquitous âTomâs Dinerâ (just hum that ja

Or you could b) make your way to Town Hall for the ann
Morning Buzz: Animal Collective, Weezer, Danielson
:: Weezer and fans rewrite some world records in the band’s new video. Not sure if there’s a world record for dressing up like a Mexican gangster, but apparently Cuomo is trying to take that crown.
:: In addition to the Danielson vinyl re-issues and retrospective being released, Secretly Canadian is giving away a digital-only live EP.
:: All the cool kids and trust fund babies are already salivating over this, but Andrew Bird has a new album coming out Jan. 27 on Fat Possum.
