Holly Madison: The three of us have been in the process of getting scuba certified these last few weeks. It has been hella fun. Our first day we spent taking tests and finishing our modules in our pool. I was so amazed to see our pool underwater through the goggles. It's so cool, all the rocks and tunnels and stuff.
It inspired me to to an underwater photo shoot. I did a nude shoot swimming underwater, diving through the grotto tunnel and at the bottom of the pool having a tea party and wrapped up in chains. Probably way too edgy for Playboy ever to publish, but it was covered by the Girls Next Door, so hopefully you all will get to see it in Season 5.
We then went to Catalina (my first time) to do our first ocean modules. I was amazed at how beautiful all the fish and kelp forests were. To tell you the truth, since California's waters are so cold, I was not expecting to see anything colorful or pretty, but we did. Amazing fish, a sea cucumber, an octopus, huge schools of shiny fish . . . it was rad! We finish our final ocean class early next month.
All this after only knowing how to swim one year! For those who don't know, I was raised in rural Alaska . . . not a place to learn to swim. My mom tried to get me into swimming lessons when we moved to Oregon, but at that point I felt too old and was embarrassed. Last summer Olympic gold medalist Amanda Beard was kind enough to teach me how to swim in one day! Scuba diving made me a lot more confident, too.
I think the hardest part of getting scuba certified is flooding and clearing your mask underwater. Not hard in the pool, but we all had to work pretty hard at it in the ocean. After I get my initial scuba certification, I want to go on to get a National Geographic certification. Just because it sounds cool . . . lol!
