The Brothers Bloom Moved to Summer
A bit of disappointing news. Summit Entertainment has decided to delay the release of Brick director Rian Johnson’s acclaimed con adventure film The Brothers Bloom from early January to May 15th 2009 in select markets, and May 29th wide.
Moving the film to film to late May shows confidence in the film, but putting it out on May 29th up against Up, which looks to be Pixar’s most adult film to date, might not be the best idea in the world.

'Brothers' Now to Bloom in May '09
This had been hush-hush for a mild while now, but it looks like Rian Johnson's The Brothers Bloom has been bumped back yet again to next May. Back in September, I had mentioned that the crime caper had moved from October to a NY/LA qualifying run next week and a wide release in January. The difference between that post and this one is that I was fortunate to see the film at Fantastic Fest a couple of months back, and it was good enough to make me equally anxious to just see the film again.

Faulkner joins THE BROTHERS BLOOM on their final job
Director Rian Johnson arrived on the scene in 2006 with BRICK, a highly original film noir-cum-high school movie. Now credit where it’s due; it was a gutsy idea, but for me it didn’t work. Here, with THE BROTHERS BLOOM, the basic premise is one of the oldest in the book, however it turns out to be to the film’s credit that it is not as original as Brick, as it allows Johnson to freshen up a tired genre with a dash of his own undeniable flair without going overboard.
The film opens with a
TIFF Review: The Brothers Bloom
Long awaited in the wake of his 2005 debut Brick, Rian Johnson's The Brothers Bloom is a magic trick of a film; the second it's over, you want to see it again so you can try to catch how you were tricked, but you also want to see it again so you can return to the joy and wonder of being wrapped up in the nimble, deck-shuffling hands of a born showman. Watching it at first, some of The Brothers Bloom's creative and thematic elements seem like they're on loan from Paul Thomas Anderson (opening narration by Ri
Rian Johnson’s “The Brothers Bloom” Pushed Back To Limited Release In December 2008, Wide In January 2009
After Rian Johnson’s audacious debut, Brick (a film that fans of Miller’s Crossing should give a try, as it contains significant similarities in style and substance), I started to get psyched for his follow-up, The Brothers Bloom. Bloom features a plot about millionaire grifters and stars Rachel Weisz, Adrien Brody, and Mark Ruffalo.
On the /Filmcast, we had already booked the weekend to review the film in October, but unfortunately we’re now hearing from Boxofficemojo, with confirmation

Toronto Review: Rian Johnson's The Brothers Bloom
Style, substance, comedy, romance, suspense, explosions, guns, con men, Belgians, Russians, Lamborghinis, harps, and everything in between. I don't know how Rian Johnson does it, but he's done it again. The Brothers Bloom is a con film, in short, and is colorfully entertaining and immensely quirky, eclectic, and brilliant, to say the very least. From Brick to Brothers Bloom, Johnson is a very young filmmaker that exudes raw creativity and here yet again it really shows to the fullest extent. To be honest, i

Rian Johnson's The Brothers Bloom Delayed Until Summer
Unlike the news that Universal was shifting the release date of Fast & Furious, this is good news! Summit Entertainment has announced that they are delaying the release of Rian Johnson's The Brothers Bloom until May 15th next summer. Summit pushed the release from January due to an apparent "glut of similar upscale features in the January marketplace" and the immense positive buzz that the film has been gaining. "We knew from our early tests and from enthusiastic festival reception that thi

Rian Johnson to Direct Looper
The director of Brick will bring his unique vision to sci fi movies with his next film.Britain has yet to see The Brothers Bloom, director Rian Johnson's follow up to his spectacular debut Brick, so we've yet to see whether he does a Richard Kelly and loses it all, or moves onwards and upwards like Christopher Nolan, but early word gives hope for a career heading towards The Dark Knight rather than Southland Tales.
He's already preparing work on his latest film, and having successfully subverted film noir

THE BROTHERS WON'T BLOOM FOR ANOTHER FEW MONTHS
I had a feeling this might happen. I just got an email from Summit, and this is what it said:Summit Entertainment will release writer-director Rian Johnson’s acclaimed romantic adventure THE BROTHERS BLOOM, in select markets on May 15, 2009, and a wide release on May 29, 2009, as announced today. The movie was supposed to be doing a limited release this month, putting it in Oscar consideration (screenplay at the very least!), but now the film is out of prestige season. It's an interesting

Rian Johnson’s Looper Plot Details Revealed
Until now we’ve known very little about Brick director Rian Johnson’s upcoming third film, a sci-fi movie titled Looper. When we talked with Johnson in Toronto (interview coming in December), he described the film as being “really violent and dark” and compared it to the work of Phillip K Dick and the first Terminator film. Now thanks to THR, we have an official logline:
“Looper is set in a present-day world in which a group of hitmen are sent their victims from the future.
Plot revealed for Rian Johnson’s time travel movie LOOPER
At the Toronto International Film Festival, out promoting his upcoming film THE BROTHERS BLOOM, up and coming director Rian Johnson mentioned to OWF of a sci-fi/time travel film he hopes to work on next by the name of LOOPER and finally The Hollywood Reporter have caught up to tell us about it.
Johnson hopes to film from his own script early next year for Endgame Entertainment (who financed BLOOM).
Plot details as below…

With multiple feature films, licensed games, a television series and continuing adventures in the comics world, hasn’t Robert E. Howard’s best-selling barbarian, Conan, had enough time in the spotlight? Isn’t it time for another barbarian to flex his muscles in the live-action world — a barbarian like Sergio Aragonés’ “Groo the Wanderer,” perhaps?

Rian Johnson Takes On Time Travel For Next Movie
If you guys hadn’t noticed from my Brothers Bloom review, I’m a fan of Rian Johnson’s work. And when I got the chance to talk to the writer/director in Toronto (I’ll be posting my interviews when the movie hits theaters in December), he talked about his next project in vague terms only: it would be science-fiction, “very different,” and darker and more violent than anything he’s done in the past.
