Laurence Fishburne is in talks to succeed William Petersen as the star of CBS' veteran crime drama "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation."
CBS and CBS Par's search has been shrouded in secrecy, but sources say Fishburne is being heavily courted to play the new character, described as a doctor/scientist outsider to the CSI unit who has the same genetic profile as a serial killer but hasn't previously acted on any homicidal impulses.

Marking the playwriting debut of George Stevens Jr. -- who dealt with the subject in ABC's 1991 miniseries "Separate but Equal," starring Sidney Poitier -- the drama serves as an excellent vehicle for Laurence Fishburne, here delivering a bravura performance.

Laurence Fishburne to replace William Petersen in CSI
Just like the rest of the cast, he’ll be given a tour of the morgue and will sit in on an autopsy. Fishburne, will appear on the series on its 9th episode as a replacement for the show’s star Gil Grissom, played by William Petersen.
As of the moment his CSI character is still being developed and doesn’t even have a name. For now, his role is known as the “The Professor”. His introduction will lead into Petersen’s leave as they investigate a case in episodes nine and 10.
