Investigator: Palin probe to end before election
AP - Gov. Sarah Palin’s chief of staff authorized ex-Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan to travel to Washington, although the governor has cited that trip as a primary example of the insubordination that led to Monegan’s firing.
Monegan is the central figure in the investigation into whether Palin abused her power when she fired him. Monegan alleges he was fired because he refused to terminate a state trooper who was involved in a bitter divorce with the governor’s sister. Palin says
McCain has biggest spending month in August
AP - Republican presidential nominee John McCain doubled his travel expenditures in August and increased his payroll and his media spending from the previous month while enjoying his biggest fundraising stretch of the campaign.
McCain reported raising $47.5 million in August, with more than $9 million coming in the three days after he announced his selection of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate, according to a report filed late Friday with the Federal Election Commission.
Overall, McCain spent n
Scientists Explain Why People Vote For Republicans [What We Need More Of Is Science]
Every election season, commentators trot out the old statistics about how more education makes people more likely to support Democrats, more studies are published on how liberal Daily Show viewers are so well-informed, and various smart people try to explain why anyone would ever vote for a Republican, against their "self-interest." This month has seen three alarming and remarkable scientific investigations into Americans' inexplicable habit of voting for George Bush and John McCain. Which means: trend! Hoo
Obama-McCain: Dow down, Obama up
The Dow Jones Industrial average may have suffered from the financial crisis unfolding on Wall Street this week, but Barack Obama's stock has risen steadily.
The Democrat's five-point edge over Republican John McCain in the newest Gallup Poll daily track -- 49-44 percent -- marks "the fourth consecutive day that Obama has inched forward in voter preferences since the start of the Wall Street financial meltdown beginning with the announcement on Sunday, Sept. 14, that Lehman Brothers was headed
We're Going to War with Spain Because McCain Misheard a Question
Yeah, whoops. John McCain may not have meant to intentionally lump Spain's leader José Zapatero in with Latin America's Hugo Chavez and Evo Morales and their anti-US sentiments, but now that the gaffe is out there on YouTube, he's not going to back down from his position:
To be fair, McCain's response was broad enough that it technically could have been about Zapatero (dude's just saying he won't meet with America's enemies!) but the smarter course of action w
McCain and Obama on International Talk Like a Pirate day
It’s “International Talk Like a Pirate Day,” and somehow — despite jumping on virtually every issue and occasion to go at each other — neither John McCain nor Barack Obama bothered to fire off an election year “yar.”
It is our duty therefore to re-write a couple of their most recent commercials in pirate-talk. We use the “official” International Talk Like a Pirate web site as a guide to correct phraseology. Please send any complaints on verbal usage t
One Undivorced Blind Vice: Straights Are Sluts, Too
Oh, this is a tough one this week: Do we do the cable star who's pretending to have a stalker (she's sending herself all kinds of horrendous things at work, just so her contract-renewing bosses think the babe's got heat, as if package-sending retards, imagined or otherwise, are going to make a difference in their decisions, oh, please)?

John McCain's War Against Spain
Outgoing president George W. Bush can admit that he's old and deaf, particularly when it suits him. But that would look really bad if John McCain did so! (Because he is old.) So the best thing to do, when clearly McCain is befuddled and has no idea what is going on, such as when discussing leaders of Spain, when he lumps them in with the likes of Hugo Chavez, is for the campaign to just to be all "YES THAT IS WHAT HE MEANT, SHUT UP, REPORTER." (Boy are we looking forward to McCain's big speech on the econom
In Vietnam, interest in one time POW McCain is mixed
Hanoi (Vietnam), Sept.20 (ANI): Arizona Senator John McCain's decision to run for the post of United States President this year, has evoked mix reactions in Hanoi, Vietnam, the place where he was a prisoner of war in the late 1960s.
For most Vietnamese, the McCain POW story is an obscure artifact of a receding history.
In a week of interviews around Hanoi, neither his imprisonment nor his presidential candidacy seemed to arouse much excitement.
When McCain first announced that he was going to contest,

ICYMI: The World Air Sex Championships Somehow Manages To Be Even Worse Than It Sounds
According to Spout Blog, after a screening of Kevin Smith’s new movie Zach & Miri Make A Porno, the famed Alamo Drafthouse movie theater recently hosted the World Air Sex Championships, which is sort of like air guitar, but with people doing it. While the very thought of a group of lonely people simulating the act of coitus with the air on a stage might be both awful and terrifying, actually seeing video footage of the event turns out to be profoundly disturbing in ways you have likely never ima
Nation: McCain Covered Up Information On POWs Left Behind
John McCain, who has risen to political prominence on his image as a Vietnam POW war hero, has, inexplicably, worked very hard to hide from the public stunning information about American prisoners in Vietnam who, unlike him, didn’t return home. Throughout his Senate career, McCain has quietly sponsored and pushed into federal law a set of prohibitions that keep the most revealing information about these men buried as classified documents. Thus the war hero who people would logically imagine as a deter

When’s Someone Gonna Walk a Red Carpet Wearing a John McCain Shirt?
Come on, closet Republicans of Hollywood. I dare you.
Cutie pie Rachel Leigh Cook hits up the Emmy swag lounges and supports her candidate at the same time.
I think she’s just so adorable.
What John McCain and Barack Obama are buying on Google [Politics]
Google is the modern American voter's oracle, able to provide an answer — perhaps not always the correct one, but always an answer — to almost any question. And it's very important to both presidential campaigns that Google show links to their websites as the answers, a privilege for which they're willing to pay. Both the McCain and Obama teams buy sponsored links on the search terms they believe voters are likely to use. Hitwise, a Web research firm, helped us dig up the campaigns' most-used se

Advocacy art on display in political ads
H'w'd and D.C.: How do politicians reach their audiences? -- The problem: So-called 527 or independent advocacy groups -- remember Swift Boat Veterans for Truth in 2004? -- are starting to run partisan television ads critical of the presidential candidate they would like to see lose the election. But with both Barack Obama and John McCain publicly opposed to these groups, how do they reach their audiences without provoking or damaging the candidate they'd like to see win?
