You Ain't No Picasso - 2nd Dec 2008

Oh, and one other thing: note this slice ... [Oopsies]
Oh, and one other thing: note this slice from the MySpace page of the Arcade Fire, who, because they're on an indie, can't use the embedded Amazon MP3 widget and are stuck with Snocap for commerce purposes. Did you guys know that Stephen Pearcy was a member of the Arcade Fire? I mean, I know they have a lot of members, but... [MySpace]

It's obvious Arcade Fire (see "No Cars Go") cribbed a lot of their style from this '80s British music collective...
A fan's perspective!!! Part 1
This is one hell of a missive. Here is how it happened on Thursday night (I'll send Friday night next): On Thursday late afternoon, I texted my Canadian rocker pal, Lola at work, and say we've got to get down to Porchester Hall and at least TRY to get in. Somehow. She tells me I am mad. But then she relents, as I promise her cider. We get to the venue as people start filing in. We buy cider and make pals with the flyer kids out the front of the venue. We let everyone know that we are looking to buy a ticket

The show is free and open to anyone who has a Nevada student ID or driver's license. The show is intended to drum up interest in the swing state's early voting program, which is open from November 18th until the 31st. With Newsom behind him, what artists'

Juliana Hatfield’s Bad Boy Decisions: An Excerpt From Her Memoir “When I Grow Up”
In her new memoir When I Grow Up (Wiley & Sons, due September 29th), singer-songwriter Juliana Hatfield takes readers from the moment she knew she’d become a performer (a waking vision after school one day) to the daily grind of being a touring musician to receiving her $400,000 advance from a major label to denying she was dating the Lemonheads’ Evan Dando in the press — inadvertantly outing herself as a 23-year-old virgin in the process. “When I was a young girl, I thought I w

Ben Folds:
You Don't Know Me (on Conan O'Brien, ft. Regina Spektor)
Ben Folds appeared on Late Night with Conan O'Brien to support his album Way To Normal last night, performing album track "You Don't Know Me." Because Mr. Folds is a showman if nothing else, there's a couple of interesting details in the clip: a pretty cute Regina Spektor's novelty Obama belt, the little drummer boy who comes out onstage about halfway through, and Saturday Night Live's Jason Sudeikiss who spends the duration having technical difficulties with his trombone.

Though the election is a month away, the mood at Barack Rock — a comedy, rock, and, yes, comedy-rock benefit at the Music Hall of Williamsburg for "that one" — was more relaxed and celebratory than the tenor of the hard-fought campaign would lead anyone (or at least any Democrat with at least a four-year memory) to believe. The pupu platter of indie-rock bands —

But don't feel too bad for the doddering old coozehound. After all, we think that we may have found a replacement girl that can quickly step into Holly, Kendra and Bridget's high-heeled shoes. Music In The Morning: Final Fantasy - 'The Butcher'
"The Butcher" is the first song from the new Final Fantasy disc, Spectrum, 14th Century.
Final Fantasy:
The Butcher (Video)
This Jesi the Elder directed clip is the first from Final Fantasy's forthcoming Spectrum, 14th Century EP. For "The Butcher," the video employs some quite violent, vaguely Henry Dargeresque animation for the mid-tempo, gloomy track. The entire EP was conceived in collaboration with Beirut, and you can certainly hear it in the instrumentation, which is heavy on horns.

Album: Ra Ra Riot, The Rhumb Line (V2/Cooperative Music)
The fact that they write jaunty songs about death is the least surprising
thing about Ra Ra Riot, a band from upstate New York who make very little
effort to sound like their name.
What they do sound like is a blend of various, mostly British influences:
1980s-era Kitchenware and Postcard Records and even, at one point, a Paul
McCartney solo record. Weird. And did I mention the album is a
life-affirming tribute to a drowned drummer? Anyway, all of thi

Barbra Streisand sings for Obama
Hopefully the last time you'll hear these three mentioned in the same sentence, Barbra Streisand has joined artists like will.i.am and Arcade Fire in their support of Democratic Presidential Nominee Barack Obama. On September 16th Streisand will sing at a 2,500 dollar per-person fundraiser held in the candidate's honor, which more than 700 people are expected to attend. Before that though, Obama will attend a 28,500 per-person fundraiser for about 250 people. [Variety]

Video: Final Fantasy: "Blue Imelda"
A sense of carefully crafted naturalism fills "Blue Imelda", from Final Fantasy's Beirut-assisted Spectrum, 14th Century EP. Final Fantasy's Owen Pallett has described the EP's tracks as "fake field recordings," so it stands to reason that this one would convey a sort of ordered casualness through its intricately arranged steel pans, bird noises, and choral vocals. The video, directed by M Blash, shares this feeling of cultivated wildness, alternating in a haphazard fashion between a bottle-toting long-hair
New Final Fantasy Video - "The Butcher"
At the end of August we premiered "The Butcher," a lilting, chirping track from Spectrum, 14th Century, the first of Final Fantasy's two forthcoming EPs. For the five-track collection, Owen Pallett collaborated with Beirut outdoors in Quebec on so-called "fake fields recordings" during the Flying Club Cup sessions. (Steel drums interact with bird songs, wooden percussion, nighttime crickets, hand claps, horns, shakers, Pallett's voice/string arrangements.) Lyrically and sonically, Spectrum's meant to depict
