Hillary Clinton: Photograph of Senator-designate Kirsten Gillibrand, surrounded by other lawmakers including Governor Paterson by Mike Groll/APGovernor Paterson introduced his long-awaited pick to fill Hillary Clinton's Senate seat, upstate Congresswoman Kirsten Gillibrand. Politicker NY reports Gillibrand said, "I realize that for many New Yorkers, this is the first time you've heard my name and you don't know much about me. But I assure you that over the next few years, you will get to know me, and I will get to know you." Surrounded by fellow Congressional members and other lawmakers —Assembly Sheldon Silver, Senate Majority Leader Malcolm Smith and Senator Charles Schumer—Gillibrand graciously thanked Paterson and acknowledged her family, friends and many colleagues, including Representative Carolyn McCarthy who voiced criticism of her yesterday (she said she would work with McCarthy on McCarthy's gun legislation), as Andrew Cuomo, her former boss at HUD and her predecessor (Paterson's and Gillibrand's full remarks at City Room): Perhaps most significantly, I look to Secretary of State Clinton, whose seat Governor Paterson has now entrusted me, with great humility. … She has personally inspired me to action. … When she was first lady, she stood before thousands of people in Beijing and bravely called the world to action to recognize that women’s rights are human rights and human rights are women’s rights. I, too, on that day heard her call.Schumer called the selection of Gillibrand an "outstanding choice.. She will be, I know, a great Senator, a great partner, a great colleague." Schumer also referred to how Hillary Clinton embarked on an "upstate listening tour" when she first ran for Senate and said Gillibrand would go on a downstate listening tour—"Bayside and Bay Ridge! Washington Heights!"—adding that he believed her views on gun issues would evolve, just as his views on farming had changed. Also, while Schumer was speaking, President Obama called to offer his congratulations to Gillibrand..msnbcLinks {font-size:11px; font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: #999; margin-top: 5px; background: transparent; text-align: center; width: 425px;} .msnbcLinks a {text-decoration:none !important; border-bottom: 1px dotted #999 !important; font-weight:normal !important; height: 13px;} .msnbcLinks a:link, .msnbcLinks a:visited {color: #5799db !important;} .msnbcLinks a:hover, .msnbcLinks a:active {color:#CC0000 !important;} Visit msnbc.com for Breaking News, World News, and News about the Economy Paterson claimed, "This was not based on gender, geographic location, of race, religion or sexual orientation." When asked by the NY Post's Fred Dicker if the choice wasn't about gender or geography, why did he pick a woman from upstate over more senior politicians, like Carolyn Maloney, Paterson—who said Andrew Cuomo was "ebullient" over Gillibrand— answered that Gillibrand has an incredible command of many issues, noting that she skillfully defended her voting against the financial bailout packages, and managed to win a very Republican district twice. And he also professed regret, when asked about the tortured selection process, for letting people see the "wrestling match" —essentially saying he let the process be too transparent to the public. There will be a special election in 2010 for the Senate seat, and then the seat goes up for grabs again in 2012 (Clinton was re-elected in 2006). And SUNY New Paltz poli sci professor Gerald Benjamin says the new Senator, "She has potential Sarah Palin pizazz and energy from a different, more moderate and informed starting point, and without the negatives."

The Star Report: Light reading - autobiographies from Sarah Palin and Britney spears?
One would think that wilderness governor Sarah Palin and resurgent pop tart Britney Spears probably don't have much in common, unless you count similar family planning strategies. But guess what? FRANK RICH: MASTER OF THE MOMENT
The NY Times Opinionator writes a devastating piece about the McCain-Palin campaign’s attempts in recent weeks to ”brand [Obama] as a potential killer and an accessory to past attempts at murder.” “By the time McCain asks the crowd ”Who is the real Barack Obama?” it’s no surprise that someone cries out ”Terrorist!” The rhetorical conflation of Obama with terrorism is complete. It is stoked further by the repeated invocation of Obama’s middle name b

Sarah Palin = Star Wars, Hillary Clinton = Star Trek [Political Science (fiction)]
The Republicans tried to replace Hillary Clinton in the hearts of millions of women voters by giving us Sarah Palin as John McCain's running mate. But Palin hasn't quite proved to be the perfect Hillary replacement. Could it be their differing policies? Nah. It's really the fact that Hillary is totally Star Trek, while Sarah is 100 percent Star Wars. And there's no substituting between those two things. Conclusive proof below. Hillary is technobabble, Sarah is The Force. Ask Hillary how she plans to refor

Palin on SNL? ‘All in good time,’ producer says
NEW YORK (AP) -- It seems like the inevitable comedic summit of this fall’s presidential campaign: the real Sarah Palin coming on "Saturday Night Live" to meet her look-alike impersonator, Tina Fey. Tina Fey, left, portrays Gov. Sarah Palin during an SNL skit. Right, Palin waves to the crowd. Meet Your New (Homophobic, Gun-Loving) Senator, New York
One had to expect that Caroline Kennedy's resignation from the horse race for Hillary Clinton's Senate seat would closely precede word of New York Governor David Paterson's appointment of a winner. Sarah Palin: Governor, vice-presidential candidate...TV star?
From the moment John McCain gave his concession speech in Arizona, my desperate hope for Sarah Palin was that she'd sulk her way back to Alaska and quietly resume the job she was elected to do (and when I say quiet, I mean as silent as my Honda Hybrid sounds when I halt at a red light). Alas, stardom is a demanding shrew that continues to poke at one's ego with its sharp stiletto, so Palin is now looking for a potential book and TV deal since her term as governor is over next year. Acting, we
