Help wanted: how can we commit a grisly murder?
Every horror fan has a favourite celluloid murder scene, be it Hitchcock's slasher shower from Psycho or the gore-fest in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre when teenage hitchhikers are hung on meat hooks. But a filmmaker is now enlisting those who feel they have better ways to screen a killing. Tom Atkinson has sent out a brief to film fans to create a death scene which is as inventive as it is abominable in the hope of selecting one or more for a film in the pipeline. Atkinson, a Cannes...

cinemadaily | AFI Fest Launches…Free!: PHOTO
AFI Fest kicked off its totally free, 23rd edition on Friday in Los Angeles. “Unlike many other leading film festivals, AFI Fest, now in its 23rd year, is not interested in an onslaught of glitzy, star-filled premieres,” writes the LA Times’ John Horn . “Film distributors and sales agents do not converge on the festival to strike rich deals as they do at Sundance, Toronto and Cannes. And while AFI Fest (which is co-sponsored by The Times) has a handful of gala...

Thandie Newton - Newton Shunned Cannes For Cambridge: PHOTO
Thandie Newton refused to join in boozy celebrations to toast the success of her 1995 movie JEFFERSON IN Paris - because she was busy revising for her university exams. The actress studied Archaeology and Anthropology at the U.K.'s prestigious Cambridge University when one of her early films debuted at the Cannes Film Festival in France. Newton shunned the bar with her castmates at the annual movie event - choosing instead to revise for her degree. She says, "I was studying for my finals at...

Problems With 'Precious'
Anne Marie Fox/Lionsgate Lee Daniels's new film may be called 'Precious,' but the story the director brings to life is anything but. The movie's heroine is poor, black, HIV-positive, abused by her mother, twice pregnant by her father, and morbidly obese. At the Cannes Film Festival, 'Precious' was met with critical acclaim, and actress Gabourey Sidibe's performance as the ill-fated Precious received particular praise. Yet movie critics are broadly uneasy about the film, with many suggesting it...

The End of Poverty?: Film Review
ue to its timely subject, Philippe Diaz's The End of Poverty? –a 35mm indictment of the colonialism that led to the free market system, that led to our current global economic catastrophe, that led to the onslaught of documentaries rushed into the marketplace to blame it all on the system that funds them–was invited to premiere at Critics' Week at Cannes before it was even finished. Which is an odd choice given that the financial meltdown in itself has already personally and viscerally brought.

Michael Haneke: Bleak house
For a film director who demands quite so much of his audience, and even more uncompromisingly of himself, it has taken the Austrian director Michael Haneke a long time (20 years to be precise) to gain the Palme d'Or at Cannes, that quintessential approbation of the art-house auteur. But then maybe, like Martin Scorsese's long wait for an Oscar, it isn't so surprising. Haneke is a director who challenges but he does not satisfy; his ever so precisely organised films grip you with their...

Christmas crank Scrooge is played with withering humbug by Jim Carrey. When Jim Carrey arrived in his horse-drawn carriage at the Cannes Film Festival to promote a new 3-D version of A Christmas Carol amid a snowy winter wonderland, he not only had cast members Colin Firth and Robin Wright Penn with him but a buxom blonde with a very low cleavage who had the comic star grinning from ear to ear. Did Carrey find her in his Christmas stocking? As it turned out, the woman was Carrey's real-life...

Miley Cyrus: “You're Gay”: VIDEO
Miley Cyrus, who wrote in her Autobiography that she was bullied endlessly in school, seems to be a bit of a bully herself . And a little homophobic, too. During a recent show, Miley changed the lyrics to “7 Things” from “You’re vain, your games” to “You’re vain, your gay”. Yikes. The audience noticed, and you can hear one girl in the clip above whisper to her friend “You’re gay?!” Considering the song is said to be about her...
