Microsoft: Bad At Software, Worser At Advertising

www.jossip.com - 12th Sep 2008

Jerry Seinfeld: Microsoft got a lot of crap when it spent $10 million on Jerry Seinfeld to produce a 90-second spot where he and Bill Gates squish shoes and walk in a parking lot together. The tech blogs hated it; Madison Avenue tried defending it; we decided it was semi-effective. But maybe Microsoft deserves zero sympathy after all, because across the board, its advertising is pretty terrible. Witness this creation:

newVideoPlayer("/jerrybill_def.flv", 506, 423,""); It was just last week that Microsoft unveiled their new advertisement featuring Jerry Seinfeld and Bill Gates hanging out in a shoe store. Shockingly, you rubes failed to comprehend what this had to do with computers and PCs remained firmly on store shelves. Well, perhaps this latest opus will change all that. In today’s installment Bill and Jerry deign to hang out with regular people in the suburbs. It may be a little less weird than their previous outi

Do You Compute? Seinfeld, Gates, and Obama Do; McCain Does Not
The first effort was hopeless crap, but by the looks of this second installment, Microsoft, Jerry Seinfeld, and Bill Gates seem to have found at least a light footing in their ad campaign for I think computers. You've heard of these computers, I guess? According to Barack Obama, they've been around for 26 years. Which is a long ass time for John McCain to never have learned to use one. Long enough to be a campaign issue? Sure, why not. Catch Obama's latest ad mocking McCain's illiteracy right after the jump

Can Microsoft Top The Mac Guy With Jerry Seinfeld?
Washington (ChattahBox) - Microsoft has launched their $300 million ad campaign starring Jerry Seinfeld and Bill Gates, but is it enough to top Apple and the Mac Guy? Microsoft launched this big new ad campaign to try and improve upon the perception of the public in regards to the Windows Vista platform. Microsoft is hopeful that they will be able to use this team to beat out the Apple Mac Guy campaign, which has been a big success to date. Critics though are not buying it, as the belief is that the team

I Love A Condiment With Booze In It!
There's a second Microsoft commercial starring Jerry Seinfeld and Bill Gates. This time, the two are staying with a "real" American family to learn about how they live. Neither Seinfeld nor Gates can act, per se, and they don't make me want to use Microsoft's products, but I find these commercials to be really charming: "It's a leather giraffe from Cabo San Lucas. That's all you there is to know." Posted by Lindsay at 9:00 AM in Commercials Tags: Bill Gates | Jerry Seinfeld &laqu

Bill Gates' $300 Million Gamble: Doing The Robot [Advertising]
Boy, $300 million sure buys a lot of storytelling. Microsoft has released two more 90-second ads starring Jerry Seinfeld and Bill Gates, the Laurel and Hardy of... Microsoft ads. More than the first, totally mystifying "shoe store" ad, these new spots flesh out the plan: Bill Gates as lovable icon. He's like Joe Isuzu with a bad haircut! He does the robot! We're still skeptical, but it's progress. You can watch the two official ads here, but we like this version even more: all the footage of the two ads (an

Bill Gates and Jerry Seinfeld - New Family
Bill Gates and Jerry Seinfeld have put out a new ad, which is more like a short movie. It’s better than the first one. I still don’t see how this $300 million ad campaign is going to sell more copies of Windows. Is anyone viewing HG with Firefox on a Linux box? Didn’t think so. Bill Gates and Jerry Seinfeld go to Shoe Circus - VIDEO
Filed under: Video, Commercials, Celebrities, Reality-Free We talked about this when they announced that Jerry Seinfeld had signed on to promote Windows for Microsoft. If you were watching the big NFL kickoff Thursday night, you might have seen what that looked like. If you missed it, it's embedded after the jump. I've watched the commercial a few times now, and I'm torn. I agreed with Brad's take in the original post, that Seinfeld may be a few years past the point of ideal pitchman. That being said, the

Bill Gates and Jerry Seinfeld have put out a new advertisement for Microsoft, which is more like a short movie, at least in my opinion. Gates, Seinfeld Funnier Second Time Around
NEW YORK (AdAge.com) -- In the latest Microsoft ad out of Crispin Porter & Bogusky, Bill Gates and Jerry Seinfeld try to blend in. An extended version of the new commercial, which is called 'New Family' and broke last night on CBS during 'Big Brother,' is already being passed around on the web. In the ad, the pair is trying to reconnect with "real people," living with a, well, more quirky than typical American family. The campaign's latest installment prompts more laughs than the first and, aga

Jerry Seinfeld and Bill Gates try again
I love you Seinfeld, but these commercials suck.

Jerry and Bill connect with ordinary folks
Jerry Seinfeld and Bill Gates are back with a new four and a half minute commercial where they live with an ordinary family.  Jerry is trying to convince Bill that they need to reconnect with normal folks in order to better relate to what their needs really are.  It is funnier than the Shoe Circus commercial, but I still don’t see the point of these for Microsoft.
