McCain Mortgages His Reputation on a Chance to Bring Obama Down

www.observer.com - 6th Oct 2008

Barack Obama: Less than a month before Election Day, John McCain's position is increasingly desperate. Barack Obama has built (or rather, regained) a mid- to high-single-digit lead in national polling over the last two weeks and has significantly improved his standing in most swing states. McCain is more likely to lose on November 4 than to win, and given the enormous built-in advantages that his opponent enjoys—the economy, most importantly—there may not be anything he can do to engineer a victory. But he's not doomed in the way that others have been at this same point in recent campaigns. In 1996, for instance, Bob Dole was running about 15 points behind Bill Clinton in early October. And Walter Mondale was lucky to be within 20 points Read full story at www.observer.com

PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE! Who Will Be Better for the Economy? Barack Obama or John McCain?
Tonight at 9 p.m. marks the second presidential debate. And that will be the big question Americans will be asking. If John McCain continues on his smear tactics approach, he can call it a night. It will simply prove that he does not have an answer for the economical turmoil we and the world are currently facing.

McCain: Who is the real Barack Obama?
Sen. John McCain continued his try and sow seeds of doubt about Sen. Barack Obama in voters' minds. He was doing so much sowing in Albuquerque, New Mexico he was a veritable Johnny Appleseed of questions about Obama, indignantly asking not only where his rival came from but where he would lead the country. It was pretty hard-hitting and if it was any indication of what we can expect tomorrow at the second presidential debate, then that event has the potential to be pretty heated. Here's some of what Mc

POINTING FINGERS: MCCAIN CHILLS WITH DOMESTIC TERRORISTS IN GLASS HOUSES
As McCain’s camp continues to go to town on Obama’s light, misinterpreted association with William Ayers, we feel it is only fair to give McCain the same treatment. Earlier we alerted you to ol’ Johnnys radical Watergate criminal pal Gordon Liddy and now we would like to point your attention beyond mere associations and to McCain himself and what he has done to protect domestic terrorists. On multiple occasions throughout his career, McCain sought to limit the government’s ability to pu

McCain's use of fear card could backfire
Dave Mendell, a reporter who once covered Sen. Barack Obama and wrote the first biography of the Democratic presidential nominee, writes on the "Run-Up blog about the McCain campaign's use of fear-mongering: As the first biographer of Barack Obama, I have often found myself in a position where few journalists find comfort: defending the honor of a politician. Yet, over the past 14 months, ever since the release of my biography of Obama, I have fielded countless questions about Obama that clearly have b

Rabid Bigots Rally Around Embarrassed McCain [Videuhoh]
It appears the McCain ticket's extra-vicious new attacks on Barack Obama, openly trumpeted by the campaign itself, have worked a little too well. The idea was probably to get people just riled enough to cheer wildly and vote Republican on election day — not to sound like a frenzied lynch mob that will make swing voters cringe. At left is a video (via Talking Points Memo) in which John McCain asks, "Who is the real Barack Obama?" and a supporter yells out, "Terrorist!" Watch as the Republican president

McCain linked to private group in Iran-Contra case
AP - GOP presidential nominee John McCain has past connections to a private group that supplied aid to guerrillas seeking to overthrow the leftist government of Nicaragua in the Iran-Contra affair. McCain’s ties are facing renewed scrutiny after his campaign criticized Barack Obama for his link to a former radical who engaged in violent acts 40 years ago. The U.S. Council for World Freedom was part of an international organization linked to former Nazi collaborators and ultra-right-wing death squads

Obama's Youth Appeal Could Decide Election, Poll Shows
With efforts to reach young voters that include everything from concerts by John Legend, Jay-Z and Bruce Springsteen to a just-unveiled iPhone application and hundreds of Facebook student groups, the presidential campaign of Democratic Senator Barack Obama has been going after the demographic hard. According to the results of a new poll conducted by USA Today, in conjunction with Gallup and MTV, those efforts appear to be making a difference, giving Obama a 2-1 lead over Republican rival Senator John McCai

Second debate is in McCain’s favorite style
AP - Tuesday night’s presidential debate offers Republican John McCain one of his last best chances to stop Democrat Barack Obama’s recent surge in the race and turn it in his favor. The debate’s town hall format is McCain’s favorite style of campaigning. He asked Obama to appear with him in a series of town hall debates this past summer, but Obama wouldn’t take him up on the challenge. That leaves Tuesday night’s debate four weeks before Election Day as the only joint

Drew Barrymore: How Barack Obama Made Me "Burst Into Tears"
Drew Barrymore says Barack Obama made her cry. "When I heard him speak about a gay person never having to sit outside the hospital room with their loved one sick inside, I burst into tears because so many people I care about are homosexual and it was profound to have someone be sensitive to that," she says in November's Harper's Bazaar. "That's the kind of world I want to live in, where we're not holding our own principles in judgment above someone or against someone." Not only does Barrymore endorse

GOP: Obama is terrorist’s ‘best friend’
In a press release posted on the party Web site — headlined PAGOP: Obama — A Terrorist’s Best Friend — Robert A. Gleason Jr. said Obama’s relationship with William Ayers, a University of Illinois-Chicago professor and former 1960s militant, is alarming and absolutely needs to be questioned. We are electing someone to be our next Commander-in-Chief and I think it is more than fair to look into their background, Gleason said, echoing a theme that the campaign of Republican presi

McCain ad hits Obama on Fannie, Freddie
A new TV ad from Sen. John McCain's presidential campaign strives to tie Sen. Barack Obama to the nation's current economic anxiety by linking him to the subprime mortgage crisis which helped trigger the current financial quagmire by claiming that while the Republican nominee tried to reform Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac the Democrat stood by "silent." Called "Rein In," as in rein-them-in, the ad even features video of former President Bill Clinton blaming Democrats for impeding reform of the two government-

Bailout tests McCain, Obama leadership
One of the most important qualities in a president - and one of the hardest for voters to gauge on the campaign trail - is the ability to move key pieces of his or her agenda through Congress. As we learned in the Bill Clinton years, it's one thing to promise universal health care in a New Hampshire living room and another to gather the votes to pass it into law. The tribulations of a power-sapped president were on full display yesterday, when a $700 billion financial bailout package that President Bush c

McCain Ad Uses President Clinton To Bash Democrats

Hillary Clinton has already starred in ads produced by the McCain campaign and the Republican National Committee this year, which used her primary-season barbs against Barack Obama for general election purposes. Now McCain is using President Bill Clinton in an ad...

Anti-Piracy Group Gently Reminds You to Use Internet for Good Instead of Evil
Say hello to Arts+Labs, a group billing itself as a sex-ed class for the pitfalls of Internet piracy. The organization includes Viacom Inc., NBC Universal, Microsoft Corp, Cisco Systems, the Songwriters Guild of America, and AT&T — you know, all the poor folks who die a little every time you even think about BitTorrent. The group is chaired by Mike McCurry, a former press secretary for Bill Clinton, and Mark McKinnon, a former media advisor for John McCain. Their sweetly naïve mission: to remind

Bill Clinton is hot to trot out good causes
Nothing - and we mean nothing - turns Bill Clinton on nowadays like helping people out. The former President seemed to wink at his frisky past Sunday night while ruminating on the joys of philanthropy with Matthew Bishop of The Economist. "Neuroscientists have monitored the part of the brain where you get the reward for giving, and it's the same place for sex," Bishop noted. Quipped the 62-year-old Clinton: "The older you get, the more the giving scale goes up." He let the line hang in the air while the c

OBAMA’S STEADINESS
TIME’s Joe Klein, though not a conservative, is someone who (1) respects McCain and (2) like many of us has watched in amazement the transformation McCain has undergone from 8 years ago. Here Klein contrasts Obama’s level headedness in a crisis with McCain’s, well, insanity. “Part of Obama’s steadiness is born of necessity: An angry, or flashy, black man isn’t going to be elected President. But I’ve also gotten the sense, in the times I’ve interviewed and c

Trying to Figure Out Blogger Economics and, Once Again, Failing
Beside speculating on why Bill Clinton isn't showing his full support for Barack Obama — one theory says it's because the Democratic nominee wouldn't guarantee Hillary a Supreme Court seat — another favorite game of the MSM is figuring out how much money those pesky bloggers make. Are they raking in the cash like a lobbyist without a soul, or are they in the poorhouse and typing away on an ancient Brother typewriter? To the fuzzy math! Who better to sic on the money trail than Sl
