Kristen Wiig: EVERYONE knows someone like Penelope, the hair-tugging, chronically fibbing one-upper (Speeding ticket? "I have 99 speeding tickets. I was speeding so fast I broke the sound barrier.") that Kristen Wiig plays on "Saturday Night Live," or so she's beginning to hear. Or maybe they've - you've - had a run-in with the gum-popping, eye-rolling, demanding megajerks; the chatty, bargain-hungry Target cashier; or an irritated armchair film critic like Aunt Linda, who mispronounces Scorsese but loves "Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties."These are the oversize, wacky-yet-true characters that Ms. Wiig, 35, has used to build an audience as a star of "SNL." Though her fans recognize the personalities, they may not recognize the actress, who disappears weekly in middle-agedly bad outfits and worse hairpieces. (If you're waiting for a wig pun, stop.)With the departure of Amy Poehler last month, Ms. Wiig has become, during only her fourth season, the most veteran female cast member on the show. Aside from standouts like Gilda Radner, "SNL" has not been known for developing female comedy brands until the Tina Fey era. In the last live broadcast, in December, Ms. Wiig appeared in every sketch but one. Though she may pop up as House Speaker Nancy Pelosi or the financial adviser Suze Orman when the show returns live next Saturday, she Will most likely, at some point, put aside the impressions and take on a warbly voice and an ugly knit to play someone more everyday."There's something about a Christmas sweater that Will always make me laugh," she said in a recent interview in a cafe near her home on the Upper West Side, which is woefully devoid of tacked-on flair. So too is Ms. Wiig, who describes herself as shy and never thought of herself as funny - still doesn't, in some ways."She has this thing that Lily Tomlin used to have," Lorne Michaels, the "SNL" producer, said, "which is that her characters are never losers, or at least they're not thinking they are. They have confidence; they think it's going well."In a phone interview Ms. Poehler, her frequent writing partner, said: "Even though Wiig plays a lot of quirky, nervous characters, she's really like a very solid person, like a real rock. I can depend on her personally, and onstage you just never are not afraid that Wiig is not going to nail it." ("I want The Times to note that I used 'Ms. Wiig' the entire time; I never called her by her first name," she added, lying.)Ms. Wiig came to "SNL" from the Groundlings, the storied Los Angeles improv troupe that was home to Mr. Ferrell, Maya Rudolph, Will Forte and Lisa Kudrow. And she came to the Groundlings - and to acting - mostly on a whim.As an art student at the University of Arizona in Tucson, Ms. Wiig, who spent high school in Rochester, N.Y., was required to take a performance class. "I was terrified," she said. "I don't really like talking in front of groups of people. Through high school if ever I had to give a speech, I would try to get out of it or not go to school that day. But then it would always backfire because then you had to do it the next day when everyone had already gone, which is more embarrassing. But I took the class, and I liked it, and the teacher was really encouraging for me to keep doing it." With a year left, without telling her parents, she dropped out to try acting in Los Angeles."Of course, when I got there, I was like, what am I doing?" she said. "I have no experience, and all the women here are models, and so I just immediately started working at Anthropologie," the clothing chain. It was one of many day jobs she held in her 20s, including working at a hot dog stand; selling white and yellow peaches at a farmer's market (" 'What's the difference?' 'The white ones are sweeter.' That was my day."); answering phones in a law firm; baby-sitting; designing flower arrangements; and serving lunch to executives on the Universal Studios lot.In Los Angeles she tried one traditional acting class. "It was one of those very Method classes where you have to sit for an hour with your eyes closed and pretend you're drinking, like, hot soup," she said. She didn't take to it. But a co-worker invited her to see a show of the Groundlings. "I'd never known anything like that," she said. She began taking classes with the school and within a few years made the Sunday company, the junior team and, about a year later, the Main Stage cast."That place changed my life," she said.Even among the Groundlings talent, "she definitely stood out," said Mindy Sterling, an actress (Frau Farbissina in the Austin Powers franchise) and a veteran Groundling who taught Ms. Wiig as well as Ms. Rudolph and Ms. Kudrow. "She has a very sort of subtle quality to her," Ms. Sterling said. "It's not that she necessarily was clever. She's an observer, and she can mimic and then bring her style to it, and that was what was really mesmerizing. There was something very real and accessible, always a sense of 'Oh, my God, I know who that person is.' "She added: "You know what? She's pretty. You don't usually see pretty funny women; you see goofy funny women. And I think she is a goofy funny woman, but she's very attractive. And my son" - for whom Ms. Wiig baby-sat - "loved her."For her "SNL" audition in 2005 Ms. Wiig did characters that would become her TV staples, like the Target lady and Aunt Linda. Even now they are sentimental favorites. "When I first did the Target lady at Groundlings, it was just a black box and me," she said. "And then the first time I showed up on set and there was a Target set with a cash register, I teared up a little bit." She was hired midseason and, after 11 years in Los Angeles, moved to New York on a week's notice. "She wasn't 20, where you were looking just at potential and it wasn't yet formed," Mr. Michaels said. "It was just all there, I think in the same way it was sort of all there in Dana Carvey."Ms. Wiig's impressions start with the voice: "When I'm working on something or they give me a tape and say you have to be this person, I don't watch it. I just listen to it." But she doesn't watch the show later to see whether they work. "If they tell me not to do it anymore, then I don't do it anymore," she said. The bombastic take on Ms. Orman, whose money-saving tips on "SNL" include making your own maxipads from double-sided tape and baby socks, came about because Ms. Wiig is a fan. She gears up to perform by warming up the studio with a song - Blondie's "One Way or Another" or, lately, Prince's "1999," with her cast mate Fred Armisen on guitar - and she does watch, and laugh at, scenes she's not in on the monitors. Mr. Michaels said that had there not been a demand for Ms. Fey to take on Sarah Palin, "Kristen could've played it equally well."Aside from "SNL" she has completed movies like "Whip It!," her friend Drew Barrymore's film about roller derby; "Adventureland," from the "Superbad" director Greg Mottola, about a kid working at an amusement park; and Andrew Jarecki's "All Good Things," her first dramatic role. (Now, she said, she's ready for the Method class.) She seems most excited about producing a movie written by her boyfriend, Brian Petsos, with whom she occasionally pops up on FunnyorDie.com in bits shot in their apartment. Her brief marriage to another actor, Hayes Hargrove, was the topic Ms. Wiig was most squeamish about. But in general she was self-effacing. "Does anyone really care what I have to say?" she said.Though she was careful not to sound negative, comparisons to her female colleagues leave her cold. "I don't think that's fair," she said. "Why can't there be a lot of great women who are doing great things?"Among the "SNL" cast mates, however, the perception of their competition was an inevitable topic of discussion. "The world of lady comedy is a small circle sometimes," Ms. Poehler said, "and there's always the thing that there can be only one female at a time in the top seat." She added, jokingly: "I would like to send Kristen Wiig a shiny new captain's hat because she's taking over the captain's position."Describe that lady-comedy crown, please. "It would be really stiff and high," Ms. Poehler said, "and when you tipped it over, birds would fly out of it, like squawking pigeons, and then you could bite into it, and it would be marzipan."As usual Ms. Wiig was game to look ridiculous, and she knew what to wear to make that funny."A turtleneck, " she said. "Some sort of slack. A slip-on shoe."Give us five telling facts about yourself."I wish I had a lot of tattoos. I am very close to my family. For most of my life I wanted to be Olivia Newton-John. I love when I can make a baby laugh. I never go anywhere without gum."Getting Funny with Kristen WiigSome women are just good at faking it. Take SNL's Kristen Wiig--the woman behind Penelope the perpetual one-upper and the annoying Target cashier...Kate MeyersYou could say that Kristen Wiig is a one-woman homage to wacko. This is someone who takes the little things--tics, accents, weird gestures--and creates a full-on personality out of them. The 34-year-old actress's mimicry is on full display on both Saturday Night Live (it's her fourth season) and the big screen: She played the tightly wound TV exec in Knocked Up, John C. Reilly's perpetually pregnant first wife in Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story, and most recently, Ricky Gervais's fast-talking surgeon in Ghost Town. For someone who puts it all out there onstage, Wiig is kind of shy off of it. She takes a while to fess up to even the basics of her life: Her parents divorced when she was 9; she spent her high school years with her mom in Rochester, New York; she attended the University of Arizona; she talks to her mother almost every day; she adores her mentally handicapped older brother, Erik ("He's the best thing in the world," she says). This acting thing flew into her head at 23, when an inner voice urged her to go west. Between a zillion day jobs--including working at hot dog stands and a florist--she landed in the famed Los Angeles comedy group The Groundlings, and eventually made her way to Lorne Michaels. Fortunately for us, the voices keep coming.A pivotal moment in your career occurred right before you were supposed to begin working at a plastic surgeon's office in Tucson. Can you elaborate?"It was the day before I was about to start. I was living in a house with three other girls, who were gone for the summer, so it was just me. I remember looking around and thinking, 'I don't want this to be my life.' Then I looked in the mirror and was like, 'OK, if you could do anything, what would it be?' And I thought, 'I would move to L.A. Just try to act.' Even though I'd only ever taken one acting class. The next day, the Jetta was packed and I was gone, freaking out the whole way."Where do your characters come from? For example, your one-upping character, Penelope. When did she pop into your head?"A lot of it comes from just unconsciously observing people. Penelope is based on someone I know. It's so far from how they act or look that they would never in a million years know. I'd say I was going to get a massage and they'd say, 'Oh, I'm getting a massage this week. I'm getting one tomorrow.' And I'd be like, 'That's a weird thing to try to one-up someone about, but OK.'"Do you love Target as much as Target Clerk does?"I do! It's clean. They have great things. It's every reason you love a store."SNL has a crazy schedule. What do you do to stay healthy?"I live between Central Park and the Hudson River, and those are two great places to walk and run. I also do yoga. A bunch of us have a private class once a week. When I'm working, I try to get something in a couple times a week. I'm a vegetarian; I eat a lot of tofu and soy. I drink a lot of water, and I'm addicted to cranberry juice. I do have a splurge day once a week when I can eat whatever I want. It's good, because it helps you stay on track the rest of the week. In the beginning, I ate anything I could see. But it's funny: The more you do it, the less you end up splurging."You've been traveling to L.A. a lot. What do you absolutely have to take with you when you fly?"I pack a good airplane kit--magazines, my computer, a book. Right now it's the novel Special Topics in Calamity Physics [by Marisha Pessl]. Also, Prevage by Elizabeth Arden--it has this anti-aging treatment, and it just feels really good and makes my skin glow. This is going to sound dumb, but I like to make my own calendars, so I bring my little calendar on the plane and figure out my month. That's my time to organize my life."When you splurge, what's on the list?"Dark Chocolate Peanut M&Ms are kind of the best thing that's ever been made. And lemon cupcakes from Buttercup Bake Shop, near my house. I also love hot, melted cheesy sandwiches. And sweet-potato fries."What is the thing you like least about yourself?"I wish I had less fear about creating my own parts. I like to write and draw and paint, and my mom's an artist, so I think I get caught up in thinking, 'I'm afraid it's gonna be bad,' and it's hard for me to start sometimes."Tell me what you love so much about your brother."He's not aware of a lot of things. He has his own world, and there's this innocence about him. He's always happy and a joy to be around. He's also hilarious. He calls me his favorite sister in New York."What is your most prized possession?"A necklace my boyfriend gave me for Valentine's. It's gold and has a really tiny cuckoo clock. I wear it all the time. It's different to give someone a necklace with a cuckoo clock. That says something about him, and I guess about me."Give us five telling facts about yourself."I wish I had a lot of tattoos. I am very close to my family. For most of my life I wanted to be Olivia Newton-John. I love when I can make a baby laugh. I never go anywhere without gum."source: new york times, women's health and kristenwiigfan.comi love this woman. and Suze Orman. that is a kickass show.

Saturday Night Live: Hugh Laurie/Kanye West - VIDEOS
(S34E11) Can you hear the ladies and British comedy fans screaming? It's Hugh Laurie! The writing this week was stronger than usual, but I could not help but feel like they didn't use Hugh Laurie enough. When you get someone like that on the show, you better make sure the audience is sick of seeing him by the end of the episode. That said, Mr. Laurie did beautifully with what he was given and he's well on his way to becoming a regular host. Check out these video highlights from the episode. "We

SNL, Please Hire Some More Comedians of Color
Saturday Night Live has been the launching pad for the careers of Chris Rock, Eddie Murphy, and Tim Meadows. But for the past several seasons, the only reoccurring African-American member in the cast is Keenan Thompson. And as talented as Keenan is, he's a little too hefty to play Barack Obama. So last January, when the cast needed an Obama impersonator to play against Amy Poehler's Hillary Clinton, they sent out a casting notice for an African-American male, but ultimately ended up putting the

See A Paul Thomas Anderson Production This Saturday!
A couple months ago Paul Thomas Anderson directed a stageplay in LA (which many described as a radioplay), which featured Maya Rudolph, Fred Armisen, and John C Reilly. First Look: Greg Mottola’s Adventureland
One of the movies I’ve been looking forward to is Superbad director Greg Mottola’s Adventureland coming of age film based on his own experiences at the Long Island amusement park. Set in 1987, the film follows James Brennan (Jesse Eisenberg), an uptight recent college grad forced to take a minimum wage job at an amusement park when he realizes he can’t afford his dream tour of Europe. Writer/director Greg Mottola – best known as the director of the hit comedy Superbad – channeled his own e

Blazin’ Trailer: Adventureland
The first trailer for Superbad director Greg Mottola’s new pic, Adventureland, has gone up, and you can see it here. Adventureland, partly based on Mottola’s own life experiences, follows college graduate Jesse Eisenberg forced to take a summer job at a low-rent amusement park to help fund his travels. The pic co-stars Twilight’s Kristen Stewart, Ryan Reynolds, Bill Hader and Kristen Wiig and – in a bonus for Freaks & Geeks-loving Apatow fans – Martin Starr. It looks like a solid comedy (Hade

What's Next For Twilight's Kristen Stewart?
Fans won't have to wait until Twilight sequel New Moon debuts to see Kristen Stewart on the big screen. Up next for the young star is Adventureland, a romantic comedy set in an amusement park in the 1980s, from writer/director Greg Mottola (Superbad). The movie stars Jesse Eisenberg as a college student who takes a job at Adventureland and falls for fellow co-worker Stewart. Sounds like a perfect match, considering Stewart seems to fall for men with dark secrets and Eisenberg certainly has one. Advent

Adventureland Trailer Now Online
The trailer for Greg Mottola’s Adventureland, his first movie since Superbad and his last movie before directing Simon Pegg and Nick Frost’s Paul, has just gone online over at Variety – and we likes, we likes a lot.A semi-autobiographical tale about a young man forced to spend a summer in 1987 working at his local theme park, Adventureland seems like a sweet, idiosyncratic coming-of-age comedy with what looks like a solid lead turn from relative newcomer Jesse Eisenberg, and some quality s

Adventureland
SUPERBAD's Greg Mottola directs this comedy about a floundering college grad (Jesse Eisenberg) who decides to work at an amusement park when his post-graduation plans fall through. ADVENTURELAND's talented cast includes Kristen Stewart (INTO THE WILD), Ryan Reynolds (DEFINITELY, MAYBE), and KNOCKED UP cast members Kristen Wiig, Bill Hader, and Martin Starr.

Adventureland trailer
ADVENTURELAND is director Greg Mottola's follow-up to SUPERBAD, about a college grad in the 80s working a summer job at a theme park. The new trailer is throwing off a definite vibe of CADDYSHACK and FAST TIMES AT RIDGEMONT HIGH, and the movie is apparently a bit more serious than slapstick, although it's difficult to take Bill Hader with a big 'stache too seriously. The movie stars Jesse Eisenberg, TWILIGHT cupcake Kristen Stewart, Ryan Reynolds, Hader and fellow SNLer Kristen Wiig. Click the prize below

Greg Mottola’s Adventureland
One of the films people have been talking about. The film is directed by Greg Mottola. It is based on his own experiences at the Long Island amusement park. Kristen Stewart, Ryan Reynolds, Bill Hader and Kristen Wiig co-star. Mottola also wrote the script. While the trailer doesn't exactly look as funny as "Superbad," it will be interesting to see what kind of adventures Eisenberg's character will come across in the film. "Adventureland" is currently set for release March 27, 2009. Watch the trailer after the jump, and check out the official one-sheet below. Franck Tabouring | Sha

"Hey, you got 80s comedy on my slacker comedy." "No, you got slacker comedy on my 80s comedy." "Let's try it!" Adventureland stars Jesse Eisenberg (The Squid and the Whale) and the belle of the ball, Kristen Stewart, along with what appear to be brief swing-bys from Bill Hader and Kristen Wiig from SNL and Ryan Reynolds.
