Got Milk? I'll Take Vicky and Cristina in Barcelona! My Faves From '08
It suddenly occurred to me just before I started grinding out my year-end summaries and 10-best lists that I have been engaged in this activity for a very long time. If my increasingly faulty memory is correct, this marks the 50th anniversary of my published 10-best lists, dating back to Jonas Mekas’ Movie Journal in The Village Voice sometime in 1958 or 1959 for the New York releases of 1958. Mr. Mekas kindly offered the hospitality of his column to a few of his colleagues, of whom I was one, even though

Allen Ginsberg Biopic, Howl, Adds Paul Rudd, Alan Alda, Mary-Louise Parker, Jeff Daniels, David Strathairn
The Allen Ginsberg biopic, Howl, starring James Franco as the American weird beard beatnik poet and intellectual has filled out a lovely cast: Paul Rudd, Alan Alda, Mary-Louise Parker (so tempestuous on Weeds), Jeff Daniels, and David Strathairn have all signed. The actors will portray real-life characters involved in a 1957 obscenity trial, which saw the publisher of Ginsberg’s epic, landmark poem, “Howl,” forced to defend the work’s graphic descriptions of homosexual acts and its m

Waiting for Confirmation That Nathan Lane Will Star in ‘Waiting for Godot’
Photo: AFPWe were a little surprised to read in Michael Riedel's column this morning of an upcoming Broadway production of Samuel Beckett's Waiting for Godot, possibly starring Nathan Lane (as Estragon) and Bill Irwin (as Vladimir). "The revival will slip in just under the wire of the April 30 Tony Award cutoff date, setting the stage for what could be a fiercely contested race for Best Actor in a Play," Riedel explains. Makes sense, we guess, but just yesterday Playbillreported a cancellation of the p

tMF FAST FORWARD: More Cast To Join James Franco In 'Howl'!
James Franco is more than just a villain or a supporting actor as some might think he is. While he plays second lead to Tobey Maguire in the Spiderman franchise, a number of upcoming projects may put Franco in a much brighter spotlight. Aside from Milk, where he's part of the terrific ensemble cast, he's also in another high-profile film called Howl.

Five Sundance White-Dude-Movie Cliches [Sundance]
Sundance '09 has provided a voice to the indie-festival disenfranchised—from the ghetto-credulous Push to gay-prison-fantasia I Love You Phillip Morris—but the fests' bread-and-butter (straight-white-guy-social-misfits and the women who love them) were also well represented. We caught two movies that fit that logline comfortably:The first was Adam, Max Mayer's romance about the cute guy-with-Asperger's next door, with Damages star Rose Byrne, and Savage Grace's Hugh Dancy. David Strathairn, Alan Alda, Jeff Daniels, Mary-Louise Parker and Paul Rudd are attached to join James Franco as Allen Ginsberg in the beatnik biopic Howl.
The Hollywood Reporter says Telling Pictures documentarians Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman will make their narrative writing, producing and directing debut with the 1950s-era tale, focusing on the obscenity trial launched to censor Ginsberg's groundbreaking book-length poem. Lauren Graham: Back on TV, in the lead role, where she belongs
We're one step closer to getting another weekly TV date with Gilmore Girls' Lauren Graham. (Pause for cheers. And... we're back.) Though we were under the impression NBC was developing a comedy for the actress, Variety reports that ABC has greenlit production on an untitled half-hour pilot in which Graham will play "a self-help guru who teaches women how to live a stress-free life -- but struggles to follow her own advice when her boyfriend dumps her." The show, which features Will &am
