Heath Ledger's -Dark' performance inches closer to infamy

Heath Ledger: Saying that Heath Ledger gave an astonishing performance in “The Dark Knight” is bordering on the cliche these days. There is little doubt the late actor — whether he had tragically passed in January or not — offered the most memorable portrayal of the year. And today I found this bit of news from across the pound, and the inevitable crystallizes further. It seems an up-and-coming painter has created a large oil paint rendering of the actor’s performance in one of the film’s most electrifying moments, a shot that is steadily becoming the role’s signature image: The four foot high oil painting is part of an exhibition of White’s new works, that opens on Friday at the Opus Art gallery in Ne Read full story at www.incontention.com

This summer came news of a Greenpoint bar called Five Leaves opening and being backed by Heath Ledger (and now by his estate). Urban Daddy has the latest, on the day of the unofficial opening, reporting that "the designer is the man behind Moto, Smith and Mills and Tailor ... The end effect is a bar that Thomas Edison might have built for his buddies. The handmade light fixtures are steel and wire concoctions that seem right out of a lab, and the bathroom door is a massive, '20s-era boiler room door. Even t

Dark Knight Returns for Oscar Run
Ok, so we loved The Dark Knight like everyone else. We saw it at the IMAX at an ungodly hour and all that. And we agree with all the early Oscar blather for Heath Ledger as the Joker, etc. But, just in case anyone missed it, or if certain people might forget it, Warner Bros. will be re-releasing Christopher Nolan's second Batman feature in January, at prime Oscar voting season, Reuters reports (via the NYT). Dark Night Oscar Watch part 55
Warner Bros really wants that Oscar for The Dark Knight and they are not going to stop until they get it. I also know a few of the execs over there are secretly high-fiving each other over Heath Ledger's death, because it really helps their case. The WB plans to re-release The Dark Knight in January, the height of Academy voting season, as a "reminder for people." You think the fact that it is the second-highest-grossing movie ever would be enough, but studios like their little statues. And why not it is

The Imaginarium of Dr. Pranassus
With the death of Heath Ledger and the obvious brilliance of his portrayal of the Joker in Dark Knight there’s been a lot of talk about it being his finest performance ever, his final performance - but that’s not exactly true. The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus was in the midst of filming when Ledger overdosed, and there was worry that it wasn’t going to be finished - Dark Knight was his final COMPLETE performance, but there is more to come. Hollywood was skeptical, to say the best. Tha

‘DARK KNIGHT’ EXCLUSIVE: Michael Caine Says Johnny Depp Is The Riddler, Philip Seymour Hoffman Is The Penguin
It’s one of the biggest — and most hotly debated — questions in fandom…which actors (and characters) will director Christopher Nolan enlist as a villain for his third “Batman” film? Rumors have abounded since the release of “The Dark Knight,” and Nolan has remained fiercely tight-lipped. But now, has one of his main players revealed some of the biggest casting news of the decade? In an interview with MTV News conducted just hours ago at the Toronto Film Festival, Michael Caine — there t

No Penguin in ‘Dark Knight’ Sequel?
The rumored casting of Johnny Depp as The Riddler and Phillip Seymour Hoffman as The Penguin was said to be confirmed by Alfred himself Michael Caine while in Toronto. So is it true? MTV went straight to the source and asked Hoffman himself, he says no. “No one has talked to me about it ever — never,” replied Hoffman. “It happened, like, five years ago, too. It was a rumor back then and it’s still a rumor. [laughs] It’s just in the press. It’s funny.” If he’s officially offered the r

‘Dark Knight’ plans rerelease
More literally, Warner Bros. wants a statuette — or 10 — for “The Dark Knight.” So the studio plans to rerelease its blockbuster Batman sequel in January, the height of Academy Awards voting season. “It’s just a matter of bringing it back as a reminder for people,” a studio insider said. 'Dark Knight' To Be Re-Released Come Awards Season
In a combined effort to boost its box office receipts enough to become the highest-grossing film of all time (which it won't) and boost its awards profile enough to garner some Oscars (which it might), That Juggernaut Which We Call The Dark Knight will be re-released this coming January, according to The Hollywood Reporter. It's the month when the awards rush is high and the mainstream competition is low, and any chance to see it in the IMAX format (had ye missed it, for shame) should be relished regardles

400 Screens, 400 Blows - Where Are They Now?
I don't know about anyone else, but I thought that was a pretty exceptional summer, as far as good, entertaining movies went. I've seen summers in which almost every movie seemed mediocre and not one standout ever emerged (2000 and 2006, for example). But this year, there were at least five standouts and at least five more really good movies. Call me crazy, but I caught up with Speed Racer on DVD this week, and even that one didn't seem so bad. (Sure, it's no Iron Man. I think it probably plays better on th

3am: Shock news
In today's shock news... all singing, all-dancing star of Mamma Mia! the movie tells us that when he was 13 he dressed up in girls' clothes. A tipsy Dominic Cooper told us: "My girlfriend used to dress me in her clothes and video me. "I'd prance around in her room belting tunes out into a hairbrush. It wasn't funny when my friends got wind of it." We're guessing he was never destined to be a brickie. Post to: Share Fark Delicious Facebook Digg Print
