In Elections we often see many people drop out in the middle of a race. Why is that?

It takes big money to run for office... which means you gotta have big money type backers and sponsers. So do candidates drop out because of financial hardships that may arise down the campaign trail?

With that thought, do you think as voters and supporters of certain candidates it is equally as important to donate to their campaign as it is to vote? I mean, hey, you vote for them, you want them for president... so do you think you should drop them a little change to further the cause even if it's $5?
