George Michael will not face charges over crack cocaine
www.telegraph.co.uk - 21st Sep 2008
George Michael: The multi-millionaire singer was caught using the class A drug by police officers at lavatories in Hampstead Heath about a mile from his 5 million mansion in Highgate village, north London.
But he was allowed to walk away with just a caution after he accepted full responsibility for possessing the lethal substance and cannabis. It is believed
Michael was only carrying a small amount of the drugs.
The 45-year-old former Wham! frontman was arrested following a tip-off by a lavatory attendant.
A spokesman at Scotland Yard said: "We can confirm a 45-year-old man was arrested in the Hampstead Heath area on the 19th of September on the suspicion of possessing drugs.
"He was taken to a North London police station where he received a caution and was released with no further action. The caution was for the possession of Class A and Class C drugs, cocaine and cannabis.
"He was released and no further action will be taken."
But the decision has been met with surprise, coming just three months after Sir Ian Blair, the Metropolitan Police chief, called for celebrities caught with drugs to be put on trial.
One senior police officer said: "The decision not to prosecute him is very surprising considering his criminal history with drugs. This decision leaves the Metropolitan Police open to accusations of one law for the rich and famous."
In the past Kate Moss and Amy Winehouse have avoided prosecution despite being photographed appearing to take drugs, because police could not prove what substance they were taking.
Michael was fined and given community service in 1998 after he was arrested for a lewd act in a Beverly Hills public lavatory. In February 2006 he was arrested again for possession of class C drugs.
In July of the same year he was caught in bushes with a van driver on Hampstead Heath and was discovered unconscious in a car the following October.
In May 2007
Michael was caught driving while on drugs and banned for two years.
Last year the troubled singer admitted to being addicted to prescription drugs and blamed his erratic behaviour on an attention-seeking and "self-destructive" impulse brought on by the death of his mother a decade ago.
Crack cocaine is one of the most lethal drugs and can kill almost immediately by inducing a heart attack.
Michael has just celebrated 25 years in the industry with a sell-out gig in London.
