"House" star Laurie shakes up image with new role
Hugh Laurie is bleary-eyed and tired. It is late afternoon, and he's been awake since 5 a.m. shooting an episode of television drama "House M.D.," which has made him a huge star in the United States.
His lead role as the cranky, brash Dr. Gregory House on the top-rated Fox hospital show is far from the comic parts that first made the versatile British actor popular back home, and Laurie is again shaking up his image as a Los Angeles cop in "Street Kings," a movie opening in major cities on Friday.

Lewis: 'Hugh is not the first to crack the US'
Damian Lewis is surprised at the amount of attention Hugh Laurie receives for his success in the US.
Lewis's own work across the pond includes starring roles in 2001 war series Band of Brothers and current NBC show Life.
He pointed out that Laurie, who found fame in the US in medical drama House, is not the only British star to have cracked America.
Contactmusic quotes him as saying: "English actors have been successful on US TV for years. Hugh is not the first to be successful in LA and he will ce

Hugh Laurie: Britain Has Branded Me a "Sellout"
You might think Hugh Laurie would be a source of pride for Britain.
You'd be wrong.
According to BBC NEWS, the House star told the Radio Times that he can't find work in his home country: "The door slammed behind me, and that's it. There's a notion that I've sold out...There's a peculiar British attitude that I took an oath I wouldn't be successful, and reneged on it."
Hugh Laurie Experimented with Vicodin For His House Role
Not that he’s been labeled a realistic Method actor before, but Hugh Laurie admits he attempted to get closer to the character he portrays on House — by experimenting with Vicodin, the strong painkiller to which Dr. Gregory House is addicted.
“I wouldn’t recommend it — we have to be careful,” Laurie, 48, tells Britain’s Radio Times magazine, “But then again … if you’re not in pain it gives a floaty, pleasurable feeling.”
Laurie, renown as a perfectionist, says he’s unhappy with

When Bad American Accents Happen to Good British Actors
British actors are usually so good at talkin' American - see Hugh Laurie on House - but The Times' Zoe Strimpel says bad Yank accents are rampant in London's West End. Strimpel talks to accent coach Mary Howland, who says, "It's difficult not to stereotype when it comes to America. A lot of it is perceptual. There's an idea of Americans as brash, enthusiastic and confident. Going into an accent that is very enthusiastic, they tend to go too far."
The Brits say American television is craptacular.

Is Hugh Laurie the new George Clooney? The House actor on how he's set pulses racing as TV's moodiest medic
Another typically sunny morning on the set of House and, in the roomy reception area of the fictional Princeton-Plainsboro teaching hospital, lounges Hugh Laurie.
The character he plays, Dr Gregory House, has just been voted the second sexiest TV doctor ever - with George Clooney in top spot.
'Of course,' murmurs Sexy Doctor Number Two reverently as he turns to an imaginary shrine and bows. 'George Clooney. The governor. Naturally, I myself spend all of my time thinking about being a sex symbol...'
