The U.S. Dept. of Labor reports that October's Unemployment rate jumped to 10.2 percent. That rate is the highest it has been since 1983. Some employers, however, are adding temporary workers. According to the Washington Post , the Labor Department said on Friday that the U.S. "Unemployment rate rose to 10.2 percent, up from 9.8 percent in September, the highest level since 1983." Employers continue to cut jobs, but at a slower rate than in September. Still, more than one out of every 10...
The Saturday Morning Post: PHOTO
Photo by mofo Mornin', Washington. Hope you're awake, because Montgomery County needs your help. The Washington Post reports that MoCo police have released a comically villainous photograph of the mask used in the October 8 shooting of Ashoka Mody, the International Monetary Fund economist who was shot for no apparent reason after pulling into his garage in Bethesda. Police know that a small, dark car was cruising the area (Millwood Road toward Goldsboro Road) at the time: stealth style, lights...

House debates healthcare bill
Washington, Nov. 7 (UPI) -- As the U.S. House of Representatives debated the healthcare bill Saturday, President Obama came to the Capitol to help win over doubters. Democratic House leaders hope to win approval for the 1,900-page, $1 trillion bill by the end of the day, The Washington Post reported. Since all Republicans are expected to vote against the bill, passage depends on keeping enough wavering Democrats in the fold. Obama got to the Capitol just before noon, about three hours after the...

Did You Have an Off-the-Record Lunch With the President Today? [Journalismism]
Because David Gergen, Jon Meacham, Howard Fineman, Mike Allen, Josh Marshal, David Brooks, and Gail Collins did! Also: Mara Liasson, who works for NPR and the Fox News Channel that Obama wants to destroy. The journalists, columnists, editors, and one blogger (also along for the ride was the Washington Post's Chris Cillizza, Times editorial page editor Andy Rosenthal, and Cynthia Tucker from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution ) lunched with Obama, David Axelrod, Anita Dunn, Bill Burton, and Robert...
Tea Partiers 'Stormed' Congress, But Pro-ObamaCare 'Activists' Simply 'Staged a Sit-in': PHOTO
Word choice can be a subtle but effective way in which the media colorfully editorialize on the news, skewing the perceptions of readers in one direction or another. Take Washington Post's Philip Rucker, who did masterful job in skewing his 19-paragaph-long page A4 story "Activists bring 'tea party' to Capitol Hill" in favor of ObamaCare proponents while smearing conservatives in a negative light. Rucker's labeling bias was a thread woven through the entire piece, starting with the...

WaPo's 'On Faith' Page Features Only Pro-'End-of-Life Care' Opinion: PHOTO
Each Saturday, the Washington Post prints an "On Faith" page in the Metro section. Part of the feature is a "From the panel" digest with a few excerpts from opinion leaders from various faiths and theological schools of thought. "On Faith" editors select a sampling of the panelists for the print digest but direct readers to the "On Faith" Web page for more opinions. Well today, the panel discussion topic was the role of "end-of-life counseling"...

Don't Get Sick in Texas
The Governor of Texas has an op-ed in the Washington Post today explaining why his state is a great model for healthcare reform? Seriously? That's like "letting Dick Fuld testify on the adequacy of self-regulation on Wall Street," says Ezra Klein. I think he's being too kind. Holy cow. The GOP: Looking for Its Way Back
Republicans are seeing signs of life in the party after a pair of big Election Day victories in New Jersey and Virginia but they still face obstacles in translating this year's successes into next year's victories in the 2010 midterm Elections, the Washington Post reports . The gubernatorial wins by Virginia's Bob McDonnell and New Jersey's Chris Christie showed a party that was more energized after its last two Election year drubbings, the Post says. And the opposition that has been sparked to...
NYT's Gail Collins Sneers at Idea That Statewide GOP Victories Mean Anything for Obama: PHOTO
The New York Times offered a Post-election column to match Ruth Marcus of The Washington Post in its aggressive insistence that the election results meant absolutely nothing, especially to Barack Obama. In a Wednesday article -- mockingly titled "Hark! The Voters Speak!" -- Gail Collins said Creigh Deeds was a rural buffoon, and Jon Corzine was an urban nightmare: Although there is no way to deny that New Jersey and Virginia were terrible, horrible, disastrous, cataclysmic blows to...

Bill O'Reilly Explains Why Viewers Chose FOX for Ft. Hood Coverage: 'The Media Guard Has Changed': VIDEO
Bill O'Reilly called out The New York Times , The Washington Post , Time , Newsweek , and CNN over some of their coverage of the Ft. Hood massacre -- which, in O'Reilly's view, blamed the wars instead of the killer, Nidal Malik Hasan , for the rampage. "The guy is either a Muslim terrorist or a crazy person. That's it. Those are the choices," said O'Reilly of Hasan. "We did 5 million viewers at 8 O'Clock, wiped out CNN and MSNBC, wiped them off the face of the earth. The guard has changed in...
Republicans Unite Against Health-Care Bill
As House Democrats negotiate the final touches of a massive overhaul of the nation's Health-care system, Republicans are preparing to vote en masse against the final bill. According to the Washington Post, no GOP members of the House are expected to vote for the bill despite earlier signs that some moderates, like Rep. Joseph Cao (R-LA), were considering defecting. Things could change down the road, however: Rep. Mike Castle (R-DE), who is running for Senate in blue-state Delaware, told the Post...
