Angelina Jolie: His day job has made Common a hit with the critics and kept him at the top of the charts over the last several years — a trend that seems likely to continue when his eagerly-anticipated “Universal Mind Control” comes out this week. But moviegoers have had their own epiphany while enjoying his soulful presence in “Smokin' Aces,” “Street Kings” and “American Gangster,” and the Chicago-born rapper is holding out hope that his most recent gig might give him his first film franchise. “I was really just glad to be in that flick, with Morgan Freeman and Angelina Jolie, and I really admire James McAvoy,” he told us recently of “Wanted,” his eye-popping action film that hits DVD and Blu-Ray this week. (Here’s a list of the “Wanted” DVD and Blu-Ray special features.) “It was an honor to be around them, and to be filming in Prague, and then for the movie to come out and be so successful was great.” Terrence Stamp told us awhile back that his character was written in specifically for sequel purposes, and screenwriter Chris Morgan has been hired to write “Wanted 2.” But, after Angelina Jolie offered her own input into the conclusion of “Wanted,” the franchise seems to have painted itself into a corner. SPOILER ALERT: Want to know why? Wanted and X-Files Hit DVD This Week
It’s a simple enough recipe. Throw some wicked Matrix-like special effects, lots of gunplay and Angelina Jolie into a film and make over $100 million. Oh, that is unless you call it Tomb Raider. Wanted is an adaptation of a hit comic by Mark Millar and J.G Jones. The movie stars the aforementioned Jolie, James McAvoy and Morgan Freeman. McAvoy is a put upon office geek who suddenly finds out he has superpowers allowing him to become a badass assassin. Jolie and Freeman are his guides into the world o

This Week’s DVD Releases: I “Wanted” To Believe In “X-Files”
A lot of worthwhile DVDs out this week, so let’s get right into it. Wanted kicks off the batch after turning into a surprise hit in theaters. While a lot funnier than the Matrix wannabee the trailers made it out to be, don’t worry, James McAvoy still comes across as a convincing (if unconventional) action hero. That plus a naked Angelina Jolie and Morgan Freeman dropping f bombs are more than enough to make Wanted worth a rental. Same goes for Step Brothers, a real favorite of mine from the sum

James McAvoy: Angelina Kicked My Ass
As you already know, Wanted was released on DVD and Blu-Ray on Tuesday. As always, it comes with a lot of bonus features. Because I have a huge love for how Angelina Jolie gets into the physical stunt work in her movies, I particularly enjoyed this video clip. Behind the scenes of Angelina Jolie kicking James McAvoy’s ass: This clip discusses how they were searching for just the right person to play the lead role of Wesley. New to Home Video: 'Wanted,' 'Prince Caspian,' 'Step Brothers,' and 'X-Files'
This week is also unusual in that it bucks the recent trend of movies that have been out for only three months before they wind up on home video. One of these flicks is six months old, and another one is about five months old. That doesn't mean we're seeing a reversal in that disturbing have-it-now trend, just that the studios wanted bigger fourth quarter pushes for movies from their second quarter. Wanted I happen to agree with whatever blurbmeister is adorning the ads for this DVD when he said it

Wanted 2 + Wanted 3 = It’s Possible!!
The first film, based on Millar’s graphic novel, was directed by Timur Bekmambetov and stars James McAvoy, Morgan Freeman, Terence Stamp, Thomas Kretschmann, Common and Angelina Jolie. It has earned over $258.3 million worldwide. Mark Millar says he was approached right after the premiere by producer Mark Platt about his thoughts on continuing the story: “What I will be doing is providing them with a very small amount of stuff for a story, and that will be used as a basic story that they can b

Pop Top movies: Jolie a sniper in average 'Wanted'
Angelina Jolie puts motherhood on hold to take up a sniper rifle in "Wanted," an all-style, no-substance exercise in which she plays a hired assassin training an ordinary office worker (James McAvoy) to be a killer. While the performances are good, the action is too fanciful and overwrought to be taken seriously or create a sense of danger. The DVD comes packed with extras about how the graphic novel was turned into a movie and on the film's special effects. -Vince HoriuchiAdvertisementReturn to Top
