IPMU in Tokyo Needs Support: PHOTO
Japan has had a long and distinguished tradition in modern physics. Just to pick one example, the amazing efforts of Shin’ichirō Tomonaga to understand quantum electrodynamics, anticipating the work of Schwinger and Feynman while remaining essentially isolated from the rest of the world during World War II. More recently, Japan has continued to do forefront experimental work, including the SuperKamiokande neutrino detector and the Belle particle physics experiment at KEK. Nevertheless, in...

T ALLAHASSEE - Since World War II, Florida has beckoned retirees looking to spend their golden years in the sun. The steady stream has made Florida's population the oldest in the nation. Now, Florida is headed for an even grayer future in the Baby Boomer retirement era, state economists and demographers predict. The consequences: worker shortages and severe strains on public pensions and government services. By 2030, more than one in four state residents will be 65 or older - or 26 percent,...

Yen's steady drop in foreign reserve status reflects wider worries
Ten years have passed since the euro was launched as a common European currency by 12 members of the European Union based on the Maastricht Treaty of 1992. The euro was initially used only for interbank trading and other electronic transactions, but the debut of euro notes and coins on Jan. 1, 2002, put an end to the national currencies of the participating countries, including the German mark, which rose to prominence after Germany raced with Japan to rebuild from the ashes of World War II.

Splitting the German Government: Expellee Leader Steinbach Puts Merkel in a Tight Spot: PHOTO
Erika Steinbach, the controversial head of an association of Germans expelled from Eastern Europe after World War II, is proving to be a thorn in Merkel's side. What to do about Steinbach has driven a wedge through the new government, and Merkel's attempt to buy Steinbach off with a lucrative government post has failed. One of the many privileges that a German chancellor enjoys is the right to allocate posts in her government after winning an election. She can reward loyal followers and foster...
Gritty, Nazi-Soaked Trailer for Danish Slasher Final Solution: PHOTO
Those darn Nazis and their darn murderous experiments. They were going at it something pretty fierce back in the day. Luckily, we’ve beaten their asses back to the stone age with a combination of true American grit and good old Fashion Nazi bashing baseball bats. (Or, what I learned about World War II by watching Quentin Tarantino movies). But it wasn’t always that way. The new Danish slasher “Final Solution” chronicles the life and times of a young Jew named Emma in...

Who We're Thankful For In 2009: Tom Hardy, From 'Bronson' To 'Mad Max: Fury Road' And 'Inception'
Tom Hardy is a man you should be watching in the new year. Let's face it: he's a man you should have been watching since HBO's stellar World War II miniseries "Band of Brothers" aired, his screen debut. You can be forgiven for missing "Bronson" this fall, as the movie didn't open very wide. It was however critically hailed -- with good reason -- and a hit in the UK, where the subject, notorious criminal Charlie Bronson, is well-known. Next year is going to kick off a whole new chapter however,...
