Hugh Jackman: 20th Century Fox sure hopes so! In a story in yesterday's Times, overcompensating executives at the studio hilariously describe Viva Laughlin–toplining, three-time Tony Awards host Hugh Jackman as "rough-hewn" and a "young Clint Eastwood." "There are not many actors who have an ability to pick up a Nicole Kidman, throw her on the bed and ravish her with believability," says Australia director Baz Luhrmann. Additionally: "He is also excellent with a cattle whip." Australia (opening November 26) — in which Jackman stars as a virile cowboy who helps Kidman drive cattle across her land — offers a desperate Fox one final chance to prove to America that he can play a "classic leading-man" before next May's release of his superhe Read full story at nymag.com

"Australia" to Top "Titanic"?
Marcos Oliveira, head of 20th Century Fox in Australia, told the Sydney Morning Herald that he believes the upcoming Australia, starring Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman and directed by Baz Luhrmann will become “the biggest [film] of all time” in that country. That’s saying a lot, since Titanic came out of that studio, as well. Further fueling my interest in this film is Jackman’s comment at the Australian International Movie Convention. He called his part in the film “the rol

‘Australia’ Delayed
The film was originally set for release on November 14th, but now they’re moving it to November 26th, five days after Harry Potter would have debuted on the 21st, had it not been moved. Without the Potter juggernaut to steal your cash, Australia doesn’t have to worry about trying to get its share before Potter hits theaters. It’ll be easier fending off Bolt and Twilight, which are now opening on the 21st instead.  Makes sense, Potter is such a huge movie, all the others need to scoop up the

Diaper duty is no sweat for hands-on new dad Keith Urban, the singer tells CMT Insider. In fact, he says, he relishes his role as full-time dad to 2-month-old Sunday Rose while wife, Nicole Kidman, is filming. "When my wife's working and I've got time off, I'm just Mr. Mom during the day, taking care of the little girl," said Urban, 40, who also called fatherhood "beautiful." The Kidman-Urban family spent time in Australia while Kidman, 40, filmed the Baz Luhrmann epic Australia, and

Review: 'A Girl Cut in Two'
Impeccably made and uncompromisingly adult, Claude Chabrol's " A Girl Cut in Two" is unquestionably the work of a master. As well it should be, given that the celebrated French filmmaker has produced more than 50 features in a full half-century of directing. If you don't believe all that experience can come in handy, this involving and intelligent film will change your mind. The standard critical line on Chabrol is that he's a maestro of suspense, a kind of Gallic Alfred Hitchcock, but as he's gotten ol

Nicolas Cage's Bangkok Dangerous, a remake of the 1999 action thriller from the Pang Brothers, took the top slot in last week's especially sleepy box office. Dangerous took in a meager $7.8 million in what the Associated Press referred to as "the slowest weekend at the box office in five years." Tropic Thunder, The House Bunny, The Dark Knight, and Traitor rounded out the top five. Read more. Check out Premiere's list of the best and worst of Nicolas Cage here. Eastwood

Are there any tough guys left in America? Over on Entertainment Weekly's PopWatch Blog, Mandi Bierly links to a piece in Variety written by Anne Thompson, in which Thompson asks, "Where have the manly movie stars gone?" She claims the Hollywood machine has churned out nothing but boy-men. Johnny Depp? "Fey." Brendan Fraser? "Goofy." Keanu Reeves and Tom Cruise? Just not macho enough! When a studio wants a real manly type, they turn to the UK, Australia or Europe: Christian Bale, Gerard Butler, Hugh Jackman

PAGE TO SCREEN: “Gran Torino” by Nick Schenk
“I didn’t buy all this stuff blockhead.  I’ve lived here for fifty years.  A man stays in one place long enough he tends to attract a decent set of tools.” There are a lot of admirable things about “Gran Torino,” a simple yarn precariously told by screenwriter Nick Schenk.  It wallows unforgiveably in the bigotry of its central character, Walt Kowalski (to be played by Clint Eastwood), pushing that boundry to laughable distances at times.  But thematically, it works.

Clint Eastwood Blasts Spike Lee: ‘A Guy Like Him Should Shut His Face’
Clint Eastwood has hit back over comments Spike Lee made about him during the Cannes film festival last month. During a late-May interview, Lee, who is in the process of promoting his own film, “Miracle at St. Anna,” about an all-black division of soldiers during World War II, lashed out at Eastwood for not including African American faces in two of his movies covering the same time period. “He did two films about Iwo Jima back to back and there was not one black soldier in both of those films,

Reading ‘Gran’
I’m about half-way through Nick Schenk’s script “Gran Torino,” the Clint Eastwood surprise of 2008 waiting to jump up and bite us all in the ass this December.  So far it’s a really casual, satisfying read.  Some bumps in the first act as Schenk has some trouble settling into the style of the narrative, the consistent racial slurs and the hard-ass Walt Kowalski character (to be played by Eastwood), but it settles in soon enough. Kowalski is an interesting mix of Paul Newman&

Dustin Hoffman: Teen Angelina Jolie Was "Thin, Gawky, Mouth Full of Braces"
Dustin Hoffman admits he didn't think Angelina Jolie would go far. While promoting their No. 1 toon Kung Fu Panda, he told reporters about first meeting the actress when she was 16. He said her father Jon Voight (who co-starred with him in Midnight Cowboy) brought Angelina and her brother James Haven to the set of his 1991 movie Hook.
