An Arbitrary Guide To This (Holiday) Weekend's New Releases

Jason Statham: It’s not quite as crowded as last year’s Thanksgiving weekend, but between four new releases and a strong slate of holdovers, there should be something for everyone on one of the biggest movie-going weekends this side of the summer. For action fans, there’s Transporter 3 (assuming you’ve already seen Quantum of Solace), which should make for an entertaining if derivative shoot ‘em up. I’d probably be more excited to see this if it didn’t sound so much like Crank (something something, Jason Statham could blow up at any minute) - and if Transporter 1 and 2 weren’t so forgettable. If you’re in the mood for a romantic comedy and don’t mind mixing your holidays, there’s Four Christmases, starring Vince Vaughn and Reese Witherspoon. Despite rumors of feuding between the two producers/stars, a solid supporting cast and the usually reliable Vaughn give this one a good shot at winning the weekend, assuming it can wrestle enough teenage girls away from Twilight, that is. Meanwhile, Baz Luhrman’s romance/epic Australia battles with Milk for the weekend’s requisite awards bait, and one or the other will likely take a hit after the weekend’s through. If I had to pick, I’d give the nod to Milk with its Brokeback Mountain-like buzz. From Sean Penn to James Franco to Josh Brolin, they’ve already got three early Oscar contenders, while Australia is a definite candidate to get lost in the mix. T

Fearless Forecast - Reese and Vince vs. The Vampires
As we always do on holiday weekends, we give you the full four- or five-day estimate rather than one that covers Friday - Sunday and then another one for the grand total. It's too many numbers. So, we've got five days this week and really six movies that Will make a significant amount of money over that time. Before we get to the new releases, let us remind you of the movies already in theaters; Twilight, Bolt, and Quantum of Solace should all perform well over the holiday for a number

Sean Penn’s Oscar-Possible Harvey Milk Puts Face to Gay Rights in ‘Milk’
CHICAGO– Just as Tom Hanks put a face to AIDS in 1993’s “Philadelphia,” Sean Penn has now put a face to gay rights as Harvey Milk in the new Gus Van Sant true-story film “Milk”.While Penn’s Harvey Milk had the physical demeanor of a petite and gentle man, the fire inside the real-life activist for gay rights was both his blessing and sometimes his poison.Rating: 4.0/5.0Milk found balancing personal relationships challenging amid his relentless quest to be the first gay politician in California

Did You Know There's a Movie About Harvey Milk Out Today?
We saw it and liked it. It's not a great film, though Sean Penn's performance as San Francisco City supervisor and gay-rights advocate Harvey Milk is phenomenal Oscar bait– but that's also the film's problem. The screenplay, by Dustin Lance Black, seems written for the Academy. The script channels Knute Rockne: All-American, even down to the heartwarming, inspirational catchphrases. Gus Van Sant directs Penn, Josh Brolin as Milk's killer Dan White and James Franco and Diego Lu

No Openly Gay Leading Men in Hollyweird Explained
Why are there no openly gay leading men in Hollywood? Gus Van Sant's "Milk" isn't just a mainstream-minded Oscar candidate; it's also a rallying cry. With Sean Penn starring as Harvey Milk, the openly gay San Francisco supervisor who was gunned down along with Mayor George Moscone in 1978, the movie (which opens Wednesday) makes its message clear: Gay people must be "out" to be counted. This theme is particularly timely given California's passage of anti-gay-marriage Proposition

Interview: Emile Hirsch on Milk, San Francisco, and More!
Gus Van Sant's Milk boasts one of the best ensemble casts this year. In addition to Sean Penn's phenomenal performance as Harvey Milk, James Franco, Josh Brolin, and Emile Hirsch all shine in their supporting roles as well. After seeing Milk a few weeks back, I sat down with Emile Hirsch to chat about playing curly haired gay activist Cleve Jones. Coincidentally, our writer Kevin sat down for an interview with the real Cleve Jones a few days later. So today I present the second part in our set of interviews

In Theaters This Week: Nov. 26, 2008
I love the holidays, because we don’t have to wait until Friday for the new movies to be released. They’re usually in theaters on Wednesday, which is ultra-cool. Here’s what’s new this week: Four Christmases. Grounded by bad weather, Reese Witherspoon and Vince Vaughn end up in their worst nightmare - spending the holidays with their families. I love both of these actors, so even though I’ve heard not-all-good reviews of this movie, I’ll definitely be seeing it. [Gecko

Box Office: Transporting Christmas to Australia
The vampire romance Twilight kicked serious butt with the fifth biggest November opening in history. Last week's other newbie, Bolt, took a somewhat disappointing third place with Quantam of Solace outselling the Disney feature by a mere half million. Here's the top five: 1. Twilight: $69.6 million 2. Quantum of Solace: $26.7 million 3. Bolt: $26.2 million 4. Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa: $15.6 million 5. Role Models: $7.3 million This week, a historical drama, a holiday-themed comedy and an action sequel

'Twilight' Beats Wednesday Opening of 'Four Christmases' To Lead Thanksgiving Box Office; 'Australia' Debuts Distant #7
THURSDAY EARLY AM: For this 5-day Thanksgiving holiday, it looks like Twilight and female tweens and teens will go together like turkey and pumpkin pie. It's too soon to call the weekend movie-wise based just on Wednesday's grosses. But the expected frontrunner, New Line/Warner Bros' sour Four Christmases, came in only No. 2 with $6M from 3,310 theaters behind $8M from 3,419 venues for Summit Entertainment's no-sex, no-violence, no-stars vampire romance that should spend another weekend No. 1. "All tho

Sara Vilkomerson’s Guide To This Week’s Movies: Boys Town
How does Sean Penn do it? We’ve seen the man disappear into roles before: the twitchy, frizzy-haired lawyer in Carlito’s Way; death row inmate Matthew Poncelet in Dead Man Walking; a vengeful, grieving father with a Massholeriffic accent in Mystic River. But none of these could prepare you for the transformation he has undergone in Milk. Playing San Francisco gay activist Harvey Milk, Mr. Penn exudes an easy warmth and light and charm with a never-before-seen megawatt smile. Harvey Milk’s story in an

Movie Review - 'Milk'
Milk Starring Sean Penn, James Franco, and Josh Brolin Directed by Gus Van Sant Rated R It was Socrates who said, "The unexamined life is not worth living," and I tried to keep that in mind while watching characters pass through the life of Harvey Milk (Sean Penn) in a new bio-pic of the nation's first openly gay elected official, directed by Gus Van Sant. Milk is the story of one man, true, a man who helped alter the perception of homosexuals in Ameri

Josh Brolin Interview, MILK
MoviesOnline sat down with Josh Brolin recently to talk about his new film, “Milk,” directed by Gus Van Sant. Shot on location in San Francisco, the film charts the last eight years of gay activist and politician Harvey Milk’s life. In 1977, Harvey Milk was elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, becoming the first openly gay man to be voted into public office in America. His victory was not just a victory for gay rights; he forged coalitions across the political spectrum. Fr

David Letterman No Match For Kissing Bandit James Franco [Milking It]
newVideoPlayer("/franco_let_kiss.flv", 506, 423,""); For a while we were worried that James Franco's epic prosthetic schlong story might be the most insidery background we'd hear about his more intimate moments shooting Milk, but David Letterman finally coaxed the definitive "kissing Sean Penn" tale during the actor's Late Show appearance last Friday. It's packed with all the sheepish eye-rolling and chuckling embarrassment that has been Franco's public stock in trade since he was cast as Harvey Milk's lov

It’s Here, It’s Queer
Gus Van Sant’s Milk, from a screenplay by Dustin Lance Black, is certainly as timely as ever, inasmuch as amid all the euphoria over the election of Barack Obama, the passage of anti-gay-marriage propositions in three states has struck a sour note, particularly in California, a state that Senator Obama carried easily, which means that many Obama voters, and probably a fair number of churchgoing Hispanics and African-Americans, voted for Proposition 8. Ironically, one of the high points of Milk is Harvey M

A Timely Premiere For New Movie 'Milk'
The CW11's Emily Frances sat down with the cast of the new movie Milk, which opens in theaters on Wednesday, November 26 -- one day before Harvey Milk's assasination. The film is about the last eight years of San Francisco County Board Supervisor Harvey Milk, who was the first openly gay politican. He and San Francisco Mayor George Moscone were assasinated on November 27, 1978. Actress Alison Pill, who plays campaign manager Anne Kronenberg, stopped by the studio recently to talk about the film. Act

Milk: "Just FedEx The Oscar To Sean Penn's House Right Now" [Critical Mass]
Milk, the new film by director Gus Van Sant, chronicles the life of Harvey Milk, the first openly gay man voted into U.S. public office who was assassinated in San Francisco in 1978. Critics almost universally praise the film's recreation of San Francisco in the '70s, Van Sant's use of archival footage, and Sean Penn's performance in the title role. However, they're undecided as to how a film that celebrates one of the biggest heroes of the gay rights movement fits into the current political climate. The re

James Franco reveals about Sean Penn snog
Sean Penn is about to head back onto the big screen with 'Milk' - which also stars Pineapple Express star James Franco.

Review: Milk
Milk is a well-intentioned film, but it's also well-made, and it never confuses nobility of purpose with narrative direction. It's full of inspiration and aspiration, but at the same time, it never kids itself -- or us -- about the tricky, twisty ways of modern American urban politics. It's a sincere plea for equality that doesn't ignore the challenges of prejudice and fear. It celebrates past victories and speaks to current struggles; it mourns devastating losses and is still a hymn to hope. It commemorate

Four Christmases hilarious trailer
? Do I like Christmas movies? I must admit: I guess I'm pretty fond of the genre. Love Actually? The Family Stone? Love 'm. That being said. This year's Christmas blockbuster is supposed to be Four Christmases, ft. Vince Vaughn (AKA Fred Claus) and Reese Witherspoon. It's a comedy, and I must say: trailer seems hilarious:
