Parsing Reviews Of 'Milk,' 'Christmas' And 'Australia'

In Theaters This Week: Nov. 26, 2008
I love the holidays, because we don’t have to wait until Friday for the new movies to be released. They’re usually in theaters on Wednesday, which is ultra-cool. Here’s what’s new this week:
Four Christmases. Grounded by bad weather, Reese Witherspoon and Vince Vaughn end up in their worst nightmare - spending the holidays with their families. I love both of these actors, so even though I’ve heard not-all-good reviews of this movie, I’ll definitely be seeing it. [Gecko
'Twilight' Beats Wednesday Opening of 'Four Christmases' To Lead Thanksgiving Box Office; 'Australia' Debuts Distant #7
THURSDAY EARLY AM: For this 5-day Thanksgiving holiday, it looks like Twilight and female tweens and teens will go together like turkey and pumpkin pie. It's too soon to call the weekend movie-wise based just on Wednesday's grosses. But the expected frontrunner, New Line/Warner Bros' sour Four Christmases, came in only No. 2 with $6M from 3,310 theaters behind $8M from 3,419 venues for Summit Entertainment's no-sex, no-violence, no-stars vampire romance that should spend another weekend No. 1. "All tho
Australia Bombs!!!!!!! Nicole is B.O. Poison
Came in 7th place yesterdayBut the big surprise was the mere 7th place opening Wednesday of 20th Century Fox's sweeping period epic Australia with only $2.5M from 2,642 theaters. This means that Fox was right to predict only $13M for the 3-day weekend and $18M for the 5-day holiday. Rival studios who thought the pic could do $25M and finish No. 4 are quickly pronouncing the pic DOA with a debut like this. ("Fox wasn't lowballing. I guess they knew how bad it was. And with
The /Filmcast: After Dark - Ep. 27 (GUEST: Seth Gordon)
The /Filmcast: After Dark is a recording of what happens right after The /Filmcast is over, when the kids have gone to bed and the guys feel free to speak whatever is on their minds. In other words, it’s the leftover and disorganized ramblings, mindfarts, and brain diarrhea from The /Filmcast, all in one convenient audio file. In this episode, Dave, Peter, Devindra, and Adam are joined by special guest director Seth Gordon to chat about The King of Kong, Four Christmases, and the art of filmmaking. Thanks

Vince Vaughn, Nicole Kidman Share Their Turkey in Hollywood Charity Tradition [Defamer Attractions]
Welcome back to a special holiday edition of Defamer Attractions, your weekly guide to everything new, noteworthy and/or stillborn at the movies. And this Thanksgiving, we're grateful for a slate of Wednesday releases granting us a reprieve from another day of Twilight chatter. Not that any of them will surmount last week's blockbuster, but we have a quick and dirty forecast for long weekend's hits, sleepers and subplots, including a glimpse at the biggest disappointment and underdog to come. As always, our
Review: "Australia"
The players: Director: Baz Luhrmann, Writers: Stuart Beattie, Richard Flanagan, Ronald Harwood, Baz Luhrmann, Cast: Nicole Kidman, Hugh Jackman, David Wenham, Bryan Brown, Jack Thompson
Facts of interest: It took nine months to shoot "Australia."
The plot: Nicole Kidman stars as an English aristocrat who travels to Australia to drive her inherited cattle to the town of Darwin. Helping her out is a stockman called Drover (Hugh Jackman).
Our thoughts: Like it or not, Baz Luhrmann’s “Australi
Are Reese and Jake drifting apart?
The Star is trying to tempt us with gossip that Reese Witherspoon and Jake Gyllenhaal are on the rocks. An Arbitrary Guide To This (Holiday) Weekend’s New Releases
It’s not quite as crowded as last year’s Thanksgiving weekend, but between four new releases and a strong slate of holdovers, there should be something for everyone on one of the biggest movie-going weekends this side of the summer.
For action fans, there’s Transporter 3 (assuming you’ve already seen Quantum of Solace), which should make for an entertaining if derivative shoot ‘em up. I’d probably be more excited to see this if it didn’t sound so much like Crank (s

Sometimes Cheaters Do Win!
I thought it was so sad when Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillipe announced that they were getting a divorce only two years ago. Two, because I love Reese Witherspoon, and still do, and...Full Article @ celebrity blend gossip

Box Office: Transporting Christmas to Australia
The vampire romance Twilight kicked serious butt with the fifth biggest November opening in history. Last week's other newbie, Bolt, took a somewhat disappointing third place with Quantam of Solace outselling the Disney feature by a mere half million. Here's the top five:
1. Twilight: $69.6 million
2. Quantum of Solace: $26.7 million
3. Bolt: $26.2 million
4. Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa: $15.6 million
5. Role Models: $7.3 million
This week, a historical drama, a holiday-themed comedy and an action sequel

Reese Witherspoon Would Love To Visit '30 Rock'
In case 30 Rock is looking for another high-profile guest star, Reese Witherspoon is offering her acting services to the NBC sitcom.
When the Four Christmases actress was asked by E! if she'd consider popping in on the show, Witherspoon responded, "Oh, sure. Yeah. I love Tina [Fey], and I think she does such a great job, and she really understands comedy for women."
If she'd like to get on the show, she should try putting on a Salma Hayek costume. But then again, Alec Baldwin probably wouldn't ever let
Hugh Jackman Talks Australia and Wolverine
As a matter of fact, I did get a copy. Fox was handing them out like door prizes at the press day for director Baz Luhrmann's long-awaited follow-up to Moulin Rouge, Australia, which co-stars Jackman and Nicole Kidman as well as a whole host of legendary Aussie actors. The tonally uneven, at times over-indulgent, always-lush love song to the titular country's spirit, national identity, and infamous outback will almost certainly divide audiences as surely as it's received pretty universal condemnation from c
MOVIE REVIEW: Australia
One who is allergic to the ordinary is OK in my books. Director Baz Luhrmann, who dazzled audiences with unexplored visuals in Moulin Rouge!, continues his streak with Australia, a big budget love film that has become archaistic these days. Big epics and costly productions for the adult crowd seem to have gone obsolete in recent years. All of that is about to change as Australia channels films like Gone with the Wind, Casablanca and African Queen.”
Look at Luhrmann’s work, don’t see it.
