It's official: Mick Jagger's lips are a work of art

www.amny.com - 2nd Sep 2008

The Rolling Stones: Mick Jagger's pout is officially fit for a museum. London's Victoria and Albert Museum announced Tuesday that it bought the original artwork for The Rolling Stones' famous "lips" logo, inspired by the singer's mouth. The museum said it bought the work at an auction in the United States for $92,500. The lips-and-tongue logo was designed by London art student John Pasche in 1970, and was first used on the band's "Sticky Fingers" album the next year. The design "is one of the first examples of a group using branding, and it has become arguably the world's most famous rock logo," said Victoria Broakes, head of exhibitions for the museum's theater and performance collections. "New York Times" Offers Yet Another Lesson In How To Write A "Vinyl Is Back" Trend Piece [Yay, Journalism!]
This week, the Sunday Styles section of The New York Times took on the "vinyl is back" trend, thus becoming the 1,495th publication in the United States to do so in the past year. Of course, the editors of the fashion-conscious Styles put their own imprimatur on the trend piece that so many other publications have tackled over the past year—and in doing so, they inadvertently provided yet another bend on the angle, one that assures countless pieces about the refound vogue of the LP in fashion magazine

So what’s with Cindy McCain and plastic surgery?
Cindy McCain, wife of Republican presidential candidate John McCain, is quite familiar with plastic surgery, as anyone who’s looked at her for more than five minutes can attest. Rumors abound that she’s had at LEAST a facelift, some eye and brow work, lots and lots of botox, maybe some fillers, injections, pretty much anything that can be popped into a syringe and injected is fair game. What do you think - she just looks so plasticy, doesn’t she? For some reason she really scares me, lik

"Kurt Russell is to the right of Attila the Hun."
Quotes from the interview circuit: "No one seems to mention that the President of the United States in Escape from New York is British! [Laughs] We made up some story about him being the love child of Reagan and Margaret Thatcher. That didn't make it into the movie because Kurt Russell is to the right of Attila the Hun. He actually doesn't think we should have to pay for roads--unbelievable. But we're friends because we respect each other's work ethic. He's a wonderful guy; I love him."    &n

Hear the One About the Holocaust Survivor Who Lived with Wolves…?
Author Misha Defonseca, who wrote a best-selling memoir about surviving the Holocaust by living with wolves, has snagged herself a one-way ticket to hell — by fabricating the entire story, including the minor detail of being, um, JEWISH and demanding a judge affirm a $32.4 million jury award (to be paid by the publisher) in her favor. The jury had found the publisher failed to promote the book in the United States and hid profits (also very upstanding individuals); however, the jury sided with Mischa

DVD Review: Trapped Ashes
In the late 60's and early 70's, anthology horror movies poured from low budget production houses throughout Europe, including the time-honored Black Sabbath from Mario Bava and EC Comics inspired Tales From The Crypt by Freddie Francis. Anthology horror on the big screen took on new life in the US in the 1980s with Creepshow and sputtered out in the early 1990s with Tales From The Darkside: The Movie. Meanwhile in Hong Kong, a ghostly anthology series called Troublesome Night has been going strong since

Same Sharpton, Different Audience
MINNEAPOLIS--So Al Sharpton was talking to room full of Republicans at a panel on education, leading them in what he called a “non-partisan” prayer. At one point, he told them about a rambunctious Democrat who, he said, asked if he was really serious about going to the Republican National Convention. Then, with former House Speaker Newt Gingrinch sitting on stage nearby, Sharpton told the crowd that the rambunctious Democrat in that story was, in fact, him. It went over well. “It was hilarious. It br

Estelle Plummets On Charts: Record Label to Blame
The whole anti-iTunes thing might have worked for Kid Rock (who climbed the charts after fans found out they couldn’t buy their copy of “All Summer Long”, and instead turned to purchasing physical copies), but when Warner, Estelle’s record label, decided to try they shot themselves in the foot. The result? The Kanye West-assisted record “American Boy” dropped from #11 to #37 on the U.S. Billboard charts. Her album Shine was doing moderately well as the 38th best-selling a

Palin booed at mention of Hillary Clinton
At the Consol Energy ballfield in Washington, Pennsylvania, Palin delivered essentially the same biographical stump speech as she did in Dayton, Ohio on Friday, pointing out that it is almost 80 years to the day since women in the United States got the right to vote.. But this time, when she mentioned the women who came before her citing the history-making nomination of Geraldine Ferraro, as well as Clinton's "determination and grace" in the 2008 Democratic primary, boos greeted Palin. Levy on Palin Pregnancy: All Good
ST. PAUL--Newsday columnist Larry Levy, here at the opening of the Republican convention, says of the story about Sarah Palin’s teenage daughter being pregnant, “It’s almost all upside.” In addition to making the pro-life, religious right happy, Levy says, "it appeals to the average, working-class woman.” Those women, Levy says, are “tired of hearing guys questioning the experience of the governor of Alaska who, geez, if she hadn’t taken time out to raise five kids, might be president of the
