Guy Ritchie rolls out 'RocknRolla'

Guy Ritchie: Just as Steven Soderbergh's "Ocean's Eleven" and its sequels seem distinctly American, reflecting the glitz and ersatz class of Las Vegas, so Guy Ritchie's crime capers feel distinctly British. His latest, " RocknRolla," set in the greasy streets and smoky pubs of London, lacks the glamour of George Clooney and Brad Pitt, but it compensates with plenty of rough humor, bruising action and a wicked dark streak. Gerard Butler, of "300," trades his Shakespearean eloquence for blokish slang as One Two, a small-time crook angling for a piece of the real estate racket. When he's snowed out of his down payment by underworld overlord Lenny Cole (Tom Wilkinson), he sets out to rob a visiting Russian billionaire, Uri Omovich (Karel Roden). As it h

Review: RockNRolla
You'd think that being married to Madonna, Guy Ritchie would have picked up on the value of occasionally reinventing oneself. But no, he keeps making the same movie, the same ultra-cool exercises in British gangster violence and stylish criminal shenanigans, and RockNRolla is the latest entry. Then again, the one time he did try something different, the result was Swept Away, so maybe he's wise to stay in his comfort zone. At any rate, RockNRolla inspires strong feelings of "meh" in me. It's not nearly as

Guy Ritchie Speaks on RocknRolla
Guy Ritchie's latest movie is RocknRolla. In it, Gerard Butler stars as One Two, the leader of a group of thieves and thugs known as the Wild Bunch. The British director recently spoke to ComingSoon.net about the project:When you start writing a movie like this, where do you even begin? Do you start with one idea and just see where it leads you?Yes, I think you start off with one idea and gradually, it gathers momentum with the sort of organic process of gathering other ideas that feel as though they belong

There's humour in Ritchie's RocknRolla retread
During his Madonna years of artistic penury, Guy Ritchie has come to resemble none other than Brad Pitt's mumbling scrapper Mickey O'Neil from Snatch (2000), Ritchie's last clever film. The more Ritchie has flailed away at dross like Swept Away and Revolver, the two movies that nearly sunk his career, the more unintelligible and irrelevant he has become. Can this really be the Guy whom people use to call the next Tarantino? But we must remember that Mickey was one of the funniest things about Snatch, even i

Guy Ritchie's 'Rocknrolla' is lock, stock & an empty barrel
If you were Guy Ritchie, and you were coming off two massive failures in the form of "Swept Away" and "Revolver," you'd want to dazzle your audience on the next go-round, right? Offer them something they'd never seen before, show them you're still the vital talent who surprised moviegoers with "Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels" a decade ago. Or, you know, you could give them a retread of your past successes, one that's not half as fresh but still has just enough of the old "Lock, Stock" swagger to prove

Toronto Interview: RocknRolla's Mastermind Guy Ritchie
It may have been a few months back that I screened RocknRolla, but I definitely haven't forgotten it. It's one of my favorite films of the past few months and that's all thanks to Guy Ritchie - the mastermind writer and director behind such previous cult classics as Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch. After the film premiered up in Toronto, I was lucky enough to catch up with Guy Ritchie for a chat about making movies, RocknRolla, Sherlock Holmes, and even Beowulf. Even if you're not that intere

Review: 'RocknRolla'
Guy Ritchie dials down the pace, soaking up the atmosphere of sweat and stale beer around a revolving cast of low-level thugs and underworld operators. By Sam Adams, Special to The Times October 8, 2008 Guy Ritchie's aggressively stylized, testosterone-addled movies careen from one steroidal encounter to the next. But in " RocknRolla," Ritchie dials down the pace, soaking up the atmosphere of sweat and stale beer around a revolvin

Said RDJ: “In case you aren’t aware I had a hell of a summer, and it’s made me much more viable to play a lead role than I might have (been) in the past.” When asked what he could bring to a character portrayed countless times on film and television, he joked: “Clearly I’m going to do it better than it’s ever been done.” Meanwhile, director Guy Ritchie said the flick will be his biggest movie “by a long shot” in terms of budget.

RocknRolla: Film Review
Alas, Guy Ritchie seems to have lost even what little touch he once had, his latest a typically convoluted saga about strangely named big- and little-time crooks that's fatally deficient in verve. Double-crosses, dirty curses and shiny firearms are all on incessant display, jazzed up by overblown rollercoaster cinematography, frantic editing and a (sufficiently rocking) soundtrack that gets very loud whenever something really, really crazy is about to happen. Ritchie's plotting is so perfunctorily intricate

Review: “RocknRolla”
Years ago, Guy Ritchie used to make corkscrewy cockney capers like “Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels” and “Snatch.” Then something seems to have distracted him. Today, he’s once again a rude boy in top form as he was a decade ago, letting thrash again with the bloodily entertaining and well-titled “RocknRolla,” which is a sharp comedy as well as a punk-pulp spree. Don’t go if you can’t handle Brit slang. (”Grass” = informer.) As in his t

RockNRolla Review
Guy Ritchie has been getting a bad rap ever since the his impressive double header of Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch turned into the double whammy of becoming Mr. Madonna in 2000 and directing Swept Away in 2002. Ritchie was quickly heading for the bargain bin after that romantic comedy became a universal joke, topped as a target of derision perhaps only by Gigli. He returned to gangster fare with Revolver in 2005, but even with star and Ritchie alumnus Jason Statham, the film wasn’t w

Madonna’s Legs of Steel
Madonna has some killer legs. Fabulous at 50. We imagine she has been building those muscles up by keeping them locked shut for soon to be ex, Guy Ritchie. Damn nutcracker! We would kill for those legs at her age… or even now!

RocknRolla.
"Guy Ritchie reshuffles a worn-out deck in RocknRolla, a return to the shady stylings that characterized his earlier flicks Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch," writes Manohla Dargis in the New York Times. "The on-screen names have changed, and the edited rhythms have been somewhat slowed, but more or less everything else follows formula: pump up the volume, tilt the camera, flex the muscle, strut the stuff, bang bang, blah blah." "Alas, Guy Ritchie seems to have lost even what little touch
