Cash-Poor George Lucas Finally Sells Off Rights To 'Star Wars' Musical; 'Narnia' Dumped By Disney And More...
Where have we been? Taking a well deserved rest, that's where, but we're a little bored today, so we're coming out of the woodwork and from our self-imposed at-home movies marathon. Here's stuff that's been happening for the four-five days we've been offline.George Lucas has finally signed off on a "Star Wars" musical. He probably has a few less millions to play with because of the economy. Maybe we should start a paypal account for him. [E!Online] Apparently a "Star Wars" musical has been proposed several
'The Spirit,' 'Seven Pounds' and 'Revolutionary Road': A Taxonomy of Trash [Rants]
Though Hollywood reserves the holiday movie season for its annual harvest of ambition, prestige and clout, even the most painstaking Oscar husbandry can often fail. For three much-anticipated films in particular, the damage varies. So Bad it's Good:The Spirit (Dec. 25). Perhaps it's best to know as little as possible going into this adaptation of Will Eisner's classic 1940s comic series, written and directed by Eisner acolyte Frank Miller in the arresting visual style of his debut (with Robert Rodriguez) Sin

A Frank Miller Western? ‘The Spirit’ Co-Stars Scarlett Johansson & Samuel L. Jackson Tease ‘Sin City 2’ And Mystery Project
T-minus two days and counting until “The Spirit” hits theaters, and Splash Page couldn’t be more excited to see Will Eisner’s classic comic character make the leap from pulp to cinema. However, when “The Spirit” co-stars Scarlett Johansson and Samuel L. Jackson recently sat down for a chat with MTV’s Joshua Horowitz, the conversation just so happened to shift to another, highly-anticipated Frank Miller vehicle, “Sin City 2,” as well as a diff
‘Batman 3’ Casting Rumor Denied By Eddie Murphy, Won’t Play The Riddler In ‘Dark Knight’ Sequel
While the British writer who reported that Eddie Murphy would play The Riddler is sticking by his story, Murphy himself has now denied the casting rumor — or rather, one of his representatives has denied it on his behalf.
According to Access Hollywood, a representative of Murphy has categorized the rumors as “not true.”
So, where does that leave us in the “Batman 3” rumor mess?
The initial British report that cast Murphy in the role also attached Shia LaBeouf as
‘Eddie Murphy As Riddler’ Reporter Sticks By ‘Dark Knight’ Sequel Casting Rumors
FROM SPLASH PAGE: Sure, we all had a good laugh at the expense of the U.K.-based tabloid The Sun after they announced that Eddie Murphy and Shia LaBeouf would portray The Riddler and Robin, respectively, in “Gotham” (what The Sun claimed to be the title of the follow-up to this summer’s “The Dark Knight”). After all — as we’ve made perfectly clear — Warner Bros., director Christopher Nolan and various high-level execs attached to the franchise have

What Kind of Year Has it Been: Dan's Top 5 of 2008
Now, normally an end of year top 10 list would be in order, but honestly, a trip to the cinema these days seems less and less enticing. Fond memories of seeing The Fellowship of the Ring for the first time, or sneaking into Kill Bill Part 1, or further back the re-release of the Star Wars Trilogy in theaters seem distant now. Many films aim to do nothing but make enough barely amusing ads (in the case of a comedy) or stupidly grand ones (in the case of action) to get the butts in the seats, then distra
'Flight Of The Red Balloon' Tops IndieWire's Poll Of 100 Critics
Man, who would have thought? Hou Hsiao-hsien's "Flight Of The Red Balloon" top IndieWire's Poll of 100 North American critics as the Best Film Of 2008. We're not sure what other widespread poll asks 100 critics for its picks, but that's a pretty substantial number and nothing to scoff at. Arnaud Desplechin's "A Christmas Tale," came in second. And populist fare like "Wall-E" ranked well above something supposedly more indie-friendly than "The Wrestler."We'll be totally honest. We never saw 'Red Balloon. One

'The Spirit' is thrilling, but some characters are weak
Comic book movies tend to be summer fare. While Iron Man and TheDark Knight were this year's hot-weather highlights, The Spirit, in its dark artiness, works well during this chillier season.
Based on the comic books by Will Eisner and written and directed by Frank Miller, it resembles Sin City, which Miller co-directed, and Miller's comic series 300.
With its dark palette and stylized look, it also incorporates an evocative film noir style. Some performances are particularly fun, such as Samu

James Martsers joins Star Wars - but not as Anakin Skywalker
Filed under: Other Sci-Fi/Supernatural Shows, Casting, Reality-FreeIn an interview with StarWars.com (yeah, I go there) former Buffy the Vampire Slayer baddie James Marsters talks about his new character, Captain Argyus, who he voices on tonight's ep of Star Wars: The Clone Wars. But, here's the interesting news: Marsters says George Lucas once considered him for the role of Anakin Skywalker for the Star Wars prequel films.
"When George Lucas was casting The Phantom Menace he, for one day maybe, considered

The Evil, the Bad and the (Self-)Important
When she put "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas" on her Worst Movies of 2008 list, Entertainment Weekly's Lisa Schwartzbaum referred to the Holocaust melodrama as "Honey, I Gassed the Kids." And, if she honestly believes the movie is as awful as she describes it (and I have no reason to think she doesn't), it is her moral duty as a critic to pummel it with everything she's got. A "dumb summer comedy" can be awful, undendurable; an irresponsible or simpleminded film that exploits and trivializes a "powerful
