Tom Cruise: The nominees for the 2009 Golden Globes were announced this morning, and there were a few surprises. The nomination of Tom Cruise for Tropic Thunder drew giggles from the crowd, as did James Franco's nod for Pinapple Express. Apparently, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association thought Franco's performance as a lovable pot dealer was much more powerful than his portrayal of Harvey Milk's lover. Check out the rest of the nominations (and spot the snubs) after the jump.BEST PICTURE (DRAMA)• The Curious Case of Benjamin Button• Frost/Nixon• Revolutionary Road• The Reader• Slumdog MillionaireBEST PICTURE (COMEDY/MUSICAL)• Mamma Mia!• Vicky Cristina Barcelona• Burn After Reading• Happy-Go-Lucky• In BrugesBEST ACTOR (DRAMA)• Leonardo DiCaprio, Revolutionary RoadFrank Langella, Frost/Nixon• Sean Penn, Milk• Brad Pitt, The Curious Case of Benjamin ButtonMickey Rourke, The WrestlerBEST ACTRESS (DRAMA)• Angelina Jolie, ChangelingAnne Hathaway, Rachel Getting Married• Meryl Streep, Doubt• Kristin Scott Thomas, I've Loved You So Long• Kate Winslet, Revolutionary RoadBEST ACTOR (COMEDY/MUSICAL)• Javier Bardem, Vicky Cristina Barcelona• Colin Farrell, In Bruges• James Franco, Pineapple Express• Dustin Hoffman, Last Chance Harvey• Brendan Gleeson, In BrugesBEST ACTRESS (COMEDY/MUSICAL)• Sally Hawkins, Happy-Go-Lucky• Frances McDormand, Burn After Reading• Meryl Streep, Mamma Mia!• Emma Thompson, Last Chance Harvey• Rebecca Hall, Vicky Cristina BarcelonaSUPPORTING ACTOR• Tom Cruise, Tropic Thunder• Robert Downey Jr., Tropic Thunder• Philip Seymour Hoffman, Doubt• Heath Ledger, The Dark KnightRalph Fiennes, The DuchessSUPPORTING ACTRESS• Amy Adams, Doubt• Penelope Cruz, Vicky Cristina Barcelona• Viola Davis, Doubt• Marisa Tomei, The Wrestler• Kate Winslet, The ReaderDIRECTOR• David Fincher, The Curious Case of Benjamin ButtonDanny Boyle, Slumdog MillionaireStephen Daldry, The Reader• Ron Howard, Frost/Nixon• Sam Mendes, Revolutionary RoadANIMATED FILM• WALL-E• Bolt• Kung Fu PandaSCREENPLAY• Simon Beaufoy, Slumdog MillionaireDavid Hare, The Reader• Peter Morgan, Frost/Nixon• Eric Roth, The Curious Case of Benjamin ButtonJohn Patrick Shanley, DoubtFOREIGN-LANGUAGE FILM• Gomorrah• I've Loved You So Long• Waltz with Bashir• The Baader Meinhof Complex• Everlasting MomentsORIGINAL SCORE• Defiance• The Curious Case of Benjamin ButtonSlumdog Millionaire• Frost/Nixon• ChangelingORIGINAL SONG• “Down to Earth” from WALL-E• “Gran Torino” from Gran Torino• “I Thought I'd Lost You” from Bolt• “Once in a Lifetime” from Cadillac Records• “The Wrestler” from The WrestlerDRAMATIC TV SERIES• Dexter• House M.D.• In Treatment• Mad Men• True BloodBEST ACTOR, TV DRAMA• Gabriel Byrne, In Treatment• Michael C. And The Golden Globes Go To ... ZZZZZZZZZZZZZ
The Hollywood Foreign Press announced their Golden Globe nominations and they must be getting as old as the Emmy and Oscar nominators. Usually the Globes can be counted on for some fresh picks but this year the choices are pretty straight-laced and staid. Especially since all the critics awards are pouring out and the love seems to be spreading all over for outside-the-box fare (listed all at the bottom). Here's the main Golden Globe nominations:BEST MOTION PICTURE – DRAMAThe Curious Case of Benjamin Butto

No Title
The media world rarely pays attention, but The Golden Globes nominations often serve as a better predictor of Emmy success than Oscar -- recognizing new programs and performers with a speed that usually eludes the Emmy academy. In years past, that meant actors such as 30 Rock's Alec Baldwin and Mad Men's Jon Hamm got a Globe nod before Emmy learned their name. When nominations were revealed this morning, struggling dramas such as HBO's in Treatment and True Blood nabbed major acting nods, despite sometimes

Golden Globes Noms Boost Benjamin Button, Doubt and Frost/Nixon
Universal, Miramax and Paramount/Warners are heaving huge sighs of relief that the Golden Globes rewarded Frost/Nixon, Doubt and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button with five nominations apiece. The three films had been virtually overlooked by influential critics' groups in L.A. and N.Y. this week. Only Frost/Nixon and Benjamin Button were nominated in the Globes' best feature drama category, though, which tends to carry more weight than the comedy category. Doubt scored four acting noms, plus screenplay fo

HBO Leads Dramas, Showtime Tops Comedies in Golden Globe Nominations
Two HBO shows received Golden Globe nominations as best drama Thursday morning. Getting drama nods were “In Treatment” and “True Blood” from HBO, along with Showtime’s “Dexter,” Fox’s “House” and AMC’s “Mad Men.” Premium cable networks also got the majority of the nominations in the comedy category, with NBC’s “30 Rock” and “The Office” joining Showtime’s “Californication” and “Weeds” and “Entourage” from HBO. In all, HBO drew 22 nominations, followed by

Golden Globes Emphasize Star Power With Film Nominations
CHICAGO– The Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced the nominees for The 66th Annual Golden Globe Awards this morning and jaws dropped at some of their choices and some of their exclusions. Somewhat surprisingly, “The Dark Knight” was left out of the Best Picture category, but far more shockingly, “Milk” was also off the short list. Both films did get a single acting nomination - for Heath Ledger and Sean Penn, respectively - but the confusing awards season was made increasi

At least Sean Penn is up for best actor (drama) and November cover boy James Franco (looking sweaty and stony, above) got a best actor (comedy or musical) nod for his lucid performance as the incorrigible drug dealer, Saul Silver, in Pineapple Express. That's about it, though! It goes to show: not all that glitters is gold...en globe worthy. (Pun'd!)He

Snap Judgment: The Golden Globes Nominations
A couple of hours have passed since the Golden Globe nominations were announced, and yet even with the extra time to mull things over, I still feel about the same as I did when I first saw the list: kinda baffled. They're all over the place! James Franco now has a major award nomination from a movie about pot! There's a category that's basically Neil Patrick Harris vs. HBO! Things are nutty this year. Here are a few of my snap judgments:First of all: This is going to be one awfully fun group of people drink

'Button,' 'Doubt,' 'Frost/Nixon' Lead Golden Globe Nominees
Here are the Golden Globe nominees for this year, and as usual, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association has managed to get a little quirky. First: Where's Milk? The film has been winning critics groups awards for a week and has been at or near the top of other lists since awards season started. It received one nomination, for Sean Penn. Secondly, where's The Dark Knight? I didn't expect it to win Best Picture here or at the Oscars, but I felt it was going to be nominated. Instead, only Heath Le
